STORYLINES TO FOLLOW

• Can Boyd Anderson build on 2015 success?: After Boyd Anderson went a miserable 1-9 in 2014 and the program in total disarray, head coach Eddie Brown took over the program and helped lead the Cobras to a magical 9-2 turnaround season including a district title. No longer a Cinderella story for this season, can Boyd Anderson build on their 2015 success? It certainly looks like it. The Cobras return 12 players from last season’s district title team, including star quarterback Shabazz Telfort, who threw for over 1,700 yards and 23 touchdowns in a breakout 2015 campaign. What’s more? Boyd Anderson adds transfer defensive back Daniel Wright, Florida State commit coming over from Cardinal Gibbons after a failed attempt to transfer to St. Thomas Aquinas led him to the Cobras.

• Will tough schedule help or hurt Boyd Anderson?: In his second season at the school, Cobras coach Eddie Brown is making a leap of faith in the quality of opponents the Cobras face. Boyd Anderson has scheduled nationally ranked opponents IMG Academy and St. Thomas Aquinas for 2016, both historic powerhouse programs in their own rights. Furthermore, both of those games will be on the road, as six of the Cobras’ 10 regular season games are this season. Both games should be obvious challenges, but will clashing with top national teams and top national recruits wind up hurting or helping Boyd Anderson down the stretch? That remains to be seen.

KEY NON-DISTRICT GAME

• Oct. 21 at St. Thomas Aquinas – Some might say the game against IMG Academy is a key game, but taking on a more nationally known and defending state champion wins out the battle of the key non-district game for Boyd Anderson. For the Cobras, the goal is going to keep this game close, but if they learned how Deerfield Beach was able to contain the Raiders for 48-minutes in a low scoring affair last season, that might help them make this the game Cobras’ fans remember about the 2015 season. The chance to go up against one of the nation’s most elite teams doesn’t come often so here is their chance to make something of it.

KEY DISTRICT GAME

• Sept. 30 vs. Dillard – This game will ultimately decide the district we feel. There are many unknowns still about Boynton Beach despite the number of transfers to make that the key game to watch over Dillard. Dillard has been more proven to have key talent on the field to make things a competitive game at this point for Boyd Anderson. However, given the talent that is back for the Cobras, this could be an easy win en route to another district championship.

AUDIBLE FROM THE COACH

“The outlook for our team is to win the district and make a run in the playoffs to the state title,” Boyd Anderson head coach Eddie Brown told Florida High School Football. “We have a very experienced team with a lot of above average talent. If we can stay healthy, the sky is the limit as to where this team can go as well as achieve great things.”

THE OUTLOOK

After a phenomenal district championship season in 2015, Boyd Anderson has only added to the core of players they have as they try and build on their success in 2016. The Cobras’ offensive line was an area of weakness and will be a major factor in their 2016 success. The games against St. Thomas and IMG Academy – although likely losses – should show Brown’s team the top competition and help establish themselves as one of the best in Broward while exposing themselves to the top talent possible in the process. The games will certainly be beneficiary down the road for Boyd Anderson, as it will help them prepare for the competition they could face in post-season play.

It should be expected that star quarterback Shabazz Telfort – who already holds offers from Eastern Michigan, Idaho, Marshall, and Toledo – leads the Cobras to their second consecutive district title. With the addition of Wright among others, Boyd Anderson could see themselves making a deeper run in the playoffs, if all goes well. However, as their 2015 team showed, there are surprises in football and nothing is guaranteed.
