GAINESVILLE (January 10) – Head coach Tim Harris, Sr., of Booker T. Washington High School in
Miami has been named the 2013 Florida Dairy Farmers Football Coach-of-the-Year following a final
round of voting by a statewide panel of high school football coaches and media representatives.
It is the second straight Florida Coach-of-the-Year award for Harris, who was earlier named the Class
4A COY for the third straight season after leading the Tornadoes to a perfect 14-0 record, their second
straight 4A state title and a No. 1 final national ranking. Washington capped the season with a 40-21 win
over Jacksonville Bolles as the two powerhouses met in the championship final for the third straight year.
This year’s title is the third for the Tornadoes under Harris, a former University of Miami standout
who led them to the 2007 state 4A crown before joining the Hurricanes as an assistant coach for three
seasons (2008-10). He returned for his second stint in 2011 and led Washington to a state runner-up finish
before capturing back-to-back state titles in 2012-13, posting an impressive 99-10 record in eight years as a
head coach. He is the first person in the award’s history (1992-present) to be named Florida Coach-of-the-
Year in consecutive seasons.
Harris tallied 147 points in winning this year’s award rather handily, but only 20 points separated the
next five finishers. Class 7A COY Jack Daniels (98) of state champion Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer was
second, just ahead of Class 8A COY Nate Hudson (93) of state champion South Dade who was third.
Roland Smith (89), the Class 6A COY from state champion Miami Central, nipped Class 1A COY Andrew
Thomas (87) from state champ Trenton for fourth, with Class 5A COY Mike Rumph (78) from state
champ Plantation American Heritage sixth. Class 2A COY Mike Tunsil (56) from state champ Hialeah
Champagnat Catholic and Class 3A COY Verlon Dorminey (49) from state champ Jacksonville University
Christian rounded out this year’s voting.
The Florida Dairy Farmers High School Sports Awards program exemplifies Florida Dairy Farmers’
commitment to the state’s youth. This is the 22nd year of these unique awards as we honor the state’s top
athletes and coaches in all 30 sanctioned and recognized FHSAA sports. The program also emphasizes to
young people the importance of keeping dairy products a primary part of their diet in their overall
nutrition plan.
