There were some upsets in Florida’s #HSFB Top 25 over the weekend that included both the defending Class 8A state champion and the Class 8A runner-up falling in their season openers as well as the defending Class 5A and Class 7A state champions falling as well.
Here is how the entire Top 25 faired from Week 0 and Week 1
1. Booker T. Washington (4A), 2-0
Defeated Oscar Smith (VA) in a 57-21 rout in en route to the Tornadoes 27th consecutive win in Week 0, in typical domination, but was slowed down by Tucker (GA), but won 19-7 late Saturday night.
2. Miami Central (6A), 2-0
Defeated Hoover (AL), 24-21 in a tightly contested game on national television in Week 0. while the Rockets just barely defeated Stephenson (GA), 21-20 Saturday evening, in part of a three team Florida sweep of the Border Series between Florida and Georgia.
3. American Heritage – Plantation (5A), 0-1
The Patriots lost to #4 St. Thomas Aquinas, 38-7 at Sun Life Stadium on Friday night. The game showed that American Hertiage has a long way to before being considered the top team in Broward County.
4. St. Thomas Aquinas (7A), 1-0
The Raiders showed domination in a 38-7 route of #3 American Heritage-Plantation Friday night at Sun Life Stadium. The Raiders showed they are back in state championship form and played the part very well.
5. Armwood (6A), 1-0
The Hawks are looking strong again like a state championship contender with a lot of talent back as they defeated Durant (7A) 37-14 at home Friday night.
6. Trinity Christian – Jacksonville (3A), 0-1
The Conquerors lost to Buford (GA), 17-0 on national television in Week 0. The Conquerors defense showed they got it together, but the offense is something that remains a question mark going into Week 2 as the Conquerors were Idle Week 1.
7. Miramar (8A), 1-0
The Patriots won in a low scoring contest against RV American Heritage – Delray (3A), 14-7. It might be a bit early to tell if the Patriots are selling the fact they are a title contender.
8. Mainland (6A), 1-0
The Buccaneers steam rolled DeLand (8A), 41-0 on Friday night showing they are going to be a tough team to beat this season.
9. Apopka (8A), 0-1
The Class 8A State Runner-up, lost to an up and coming RV Oak Ridge (7A), 28-23 at home. There are still some questions looming around the Blue Darters that will likely be answered in the next few weeks.
10. Cocoa (4A), 0-0
The Tigers were idle this week
11. Dwyer (7A), 0-1
The Panthers looked shaky after performing poorly in the preseason and against Glades Central on Friday (4A), 12-7.
12. Niceville (7A), 1-1
The Eagles didn’t perform up to the level as expected on national television against Clay-Chalkville (AL), losing to them 44-23. However, the Eagles picked up a win on Friday night against Rutherford (5A), winning in a rout, 55-7.
13. Dr. Phillips (8A), 1-0
Dr. Phillips defeated Timber Creek (8A) by a score of 23-14 on Friday night, in what was a fairly even game.
14. First Coast (8A), 1-0
The Buccaneers defeated Ribault (5A) on Friday night, 41-6, showing total domination, but still have a few things to tweak including getting better in discipline.
15. Plant (8A), 0-1
Plant had a decent showing against Lowndes (GA) on Friday night in a battle of the borders, although they lost 20-14.
16. Osceola – Kissimmee (7A), 1-0
The Kowboys with a K showed total domination on Friday night as they ran over Freedom-Orlando (8A), winning 48-7.
17. Bolles (4A), 1-0
The Bulldogs pitched a shutout on visiting Hernando (5A) on Friday night, winning 44-0.
18. South Dade (8A), 0-1
The heavy graduation losses for the defending Class 8A state champions showed on Thursday night as Columbus (8A) took home the victory, 45-38.
19. Flanagan (8A), 1-0
The Falcons, with their impressive talent, completely dominated Stranahan (6A) on Friday night, winning, 36-0
20. Coral Gables (8A), 1-0
The Cavaliers were tested on Friday night by Miami Southridge (8A), but won by two touchdowns, 19-7.
21. East Lake (7A), 1-0
The Eagles picked up after losing in the preseason and totally dominated a Palm Harbor Unviersity (8A) team which had defeated Jesuit in the preseason. East Lake won by a score of 40-10.
22. Columbia (6A), 1-0
The Tigers struggled on defense allowing Gainesville to stay in the game that forced overtime. Columbia escaped out of Gainesville with a 44-43 win in OT.
23. Fort Pierce Central (8A), 1-0
The Corbas pitched a huge shutout on Friday night in Showdown 35, winning over Fort Pierce Westwood (6A), 51-0
24. Clay (5A), 1-0
Clay finally defeated RV Fleming Island (7A) for the first time since 2005, winning 25-22 where Clay’s last second field goal sealed the deal.
25. Naples (6A), 1-0
The Golden Eagles were dominant on Friday night as they routed Dunbar (5A), 46-7 at home.
