GAINESVILLE, Fla. – It was a clear sweep for Alonso (Tampa) and Robinson (Tampa) in the respective classifications for the 2023 Florida Dairy Farmers Awards in girls flag football for their respective classifications that was announced on Tuesday afternoon.

The Florida Dairy Farmers Award selections names a Player of the Year and a Coach of the Year for each of the two FHSAA classifications.

For Class 2A Player of the Year, quarterback Mieke Rowe for Alonso won after putting up an impressive performance, completing 403-of-539 passes for 4,813 yards with 92 touchdowns against 11 interceptions while rushing for 201 yards on 61 carries and scoring four more touchdowns.

In the Class 1A award for Player of the Year, wide receiver/safety Katejion Robinson of Robinson took home the honors this year after helping the Knights win their seventh straight Class 1A state championship. The honor comes after Katejion had 87 catches for 1,267 yards receiving and 28 touchdowns along with 18 flag pulls and eight interceptions on defense.

Alonso head coach Matt Hernandez took home the Class 2A Coach of the Year honors after his Ravens squad completed an undefeated season at 23-0 after winning the Class 2A state championship. The state championship victory for the Ravens over Fleming Island marked their first state title since the 2019 season.

Joshua Saunders for Robinson was once again named the Class 1A Coach of the Year after the team posted a 21-2 record complete with the seventh straight Class 1A state championship and the school’s eight state championship victory in the last nine seasons (excluding the 2020 season which was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic). Saunders has a 232-30 record as head coach at Robinson over 17 seasons.

The Miss Flag Football and Flag Football Coach-of-the-Year award winners will be named sometime next week after the final round of voting concludes.
