With high school football back in full swing around the state, the scoutSMART Florida Player of the Week Awards have returned for the 2023 season. Along with nominations from coaches and media and research from scoutSMART and FloridaHSFootball.com we will present to you five candidates for the scoutSMART Florida Player of the Week.
Voting is open to fans to help decide who should be the scoutSMART Florida Player of the Week for Week 2 is now through Midnight on Thursday night, September 14. The winner will be announced on Friday by scoutSMART and FloridaHSFootball.com social media platforms on Friday, September 8, with a full profile on the winner presented on Monday, September 18.
EDITOR’S NOTE: The scoutSMART Florida Player of the Week poll is intended to be fun, and without limits, and be supported with good sportsmanship. However, at anytime that is suspected that votes received for an athletes that are generated by any means outside of human voting will be disqualified from the poll.
THE NOMINEES
RB Anthony Carrie, Sr., Carrollwood Day (Tampa) – In a 56-34 victory over Calvary Christian (Clearwater), Carrie rushed for 205 yards on 26 carries and scored three touchdowns for the Patriots.
WR Jaime Ffrench Jr., Sr., Mandarin (Jacksonville) – Leading his team to victory, Ffrench hauled in 5 catches for 185 yards and three touchdowns in a 50-20 win over Riverside (Jacksonville).
ATH Fred Gaskin, Sr., Vanguard (Ocala) – Gaskin went 22-of-33 passing for 259 yards and two touchdowns while adding 16 carries for 73 yards rushing and two more touchdowns while adding 4 tackles and 1 tackle for loss, helping the Knights bounce back from a 21-0 deficit to beat Dunnellon 28-21 in Week 3.
QB Brady Hart, So., Cocoa – One of the upcoming quarterbacks in the state, Hart went 35-of-50 passing for 493 yards and 5 touchdowns in a very tight 37-36 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale).
QB Sabby Meassick, So., Tohopekaliga (Kissimmee) – Another of the upcoming quarterbacks in the state, Meassick went 37-of-46 passing for 563 yards and 7 touchdowns in a 49-21 victory over Foundation Academy (Winter Garden)
QB Alberto Mendoza, Sr., Columbus (Miami) – Going 17-of-19 passing for 261 yards and four touchdowns, Mendoza led the Explorers to their third straight win of the season a 42-14 victory over Jesuit (Tampa).
DL Kemari Scurry, Jr., Madison County (Madison) – Helped the Cowboys through adversity from Hurricane Idalia in leading the defense with 13 tackles and a quarterback hurry with a 30-16 win over Fitzgerald, Ga. at the Border War games in Brunswick, Ga.
RB Cole Tabb, Sr., Choctawhatchee (Fort Walton Beach) – Broke the school record for rushing yardage in a single game with 365 yards rushing and four touchdowns which 311 yards and 3 touchdowns were already accounted for by halftime in a 49-27 victory over Crestview.
