One of the hottest topics in football in the past year, revolves around concussions. While it has been covered extensively in the NFL, it is an area that impacts all levels. Since players continue to get more athletic as we evolve, the game has sought advances in the gear players use. Matt Porter of the Palm Beach Post did an interesting story which discusses Cardinal Newman High School in Palm Beach and their use of Guardian Helmet Caps to help minimize concussions. As you read the extensive article, you will find conflicting viewpoints of this product. I have attached the direct link from the company here.
I am glad a company such as this is attempting to develop the appropriate protective gear. It was sad to see a player from my area accept a scholarship to a prominent D1 school this year, only to learn he will never play a down due to multiple concussions. My only concern with this technology or any advancement is the inappropriate use. Will coaches neglect to show the players the proper hitting or tackling technique? Will a player remain in a contact drill longer than expected because his injury is masked? There is no panacea.
