After a short hiatus, I am back to questioning things and reflect in the world of Florida High School Football.
Will Western win another game?
After starting the season 6-0, the Wildcats from Davie, FL. had some believe that this could be a very special team and were critical when these athletes were nor receiving the same accolades as other neighborhood schools with lesser records. Despite their somewhat more favorable schedule, I believed Western, with its experienced quarterback, was worthy of attaining a playoff spot through District 12-8A. Unfortunately, their 45-7 loss to Flanagan on Friday showed many of us that their readiness for primetime is still in the development stage as the only thing that significantly stopped their opponent’s offense was a 45 minute lightning delay in the first quarter. With remaining district games against Miramar and Cypress Bay, Western may need to rely on their game against Nova in week 11, just to salvage another win while not gaining a playoff spot.
How far can South Plantation go this year?
South Plantation has been dominant at 7-0 and is coming off two shutout wins as they lead through District 11-8A. With a nationally elite running back, supported by an effective, game-managing quarterback, could this be the year for the Paladins? S. Plantation is also successful by moving the ball and when not scoring, providing a long field for their opponent. Based on the FHSAA playoff configurations, it is conceivable that South Plantation could be hosting a vulnerable Southridge or Columbus in Broward County in December.
Is there any district better than 16-6A?
For those pundits that do not support the current playoff selection system of choosing the top 2 teams from each district regardless of talent, look no further than District 16-6A. Few can argue that Carol City, Miami Central, Homestead and Northwestern can compete in any district. My hope is that during the next biannual review, at least two of these schools are reclassified or at least placed in another district.
