GAINESVILLE – The Florida High School Athletic Association held its 21st Annual Academic All-State Awards banquet last night, honoring 24 of the top athletes who also excelled inside the classroom.
Several of those athletes came from Football and Flag Football. They are as followed: Jacqueline Orcutt, Fort Walton Beach; Jake Bakkedahl, Martin County; Douglas Sandberg, Bloomingdale; Matthew Sweeeney, Maclay; David Trigg, University Christian.
Below are the bios, as provided by the FHSAA for each of the five outstanding student-athletes:
Jacqueline Orcutt, Fort Walton Beach – Jackie is an Advanced Placement Scholar with Honors and has a 3.96 grade point average. Jackie earned four varsity letters in soccer and swimming plus two varsity letters in basketball and flag football and one varsity letter in track and field and volleyball. She has also been active in her community, acquiring over 500 hours through volunteering with church, Girls Scouts, Military Deployed Airmen and Family Support and recreational and middle school swim teams. Jackie will attend the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO, and is undecided in her major.
Jake Bakkedahl, Martin County (Stuart) – With a 4.0 grade point average, Jake ranks 13th in a class of 466 students and was recognized as an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction. A two sport athlete, he earned varsity letters in football and lacrosse. In addition, he honored with the BB&T Scholar Athlete of the Week for football in 2014. Jake’s service to the community includes over 400 total hours of volunteering, which includes time at the American Red Cross, Citrus Grove Elementary School and the Boys and Girls Club of Palm City. Jake has chosen to attend the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, where he will study oceans engineering.
Douglas Sandberg, Bloomingdale (Valrico) –Douglas ranks 14th in a class of 527 students with a grade point average of 3.9. Earning varsity letters in three sports, Douglas was a member of the baseball, football and soccer teams. Among the multiple accolades he has for his athletic achievement, Douglas is a recipient of the National Football Foundation Scholar Athlete Award, Florida Class 8-A Offensive Honorable Mention and Perfect Game Preseason Underclass All-American Honorable Mention in baseball. Volunteering his time at Strides for Education, Relay for Life, the Humane Society, the Crossing Church, and Fishhawk Little League shows just how involved he was in the community. Douglas will attend the University of Florida in Gainesville to pursue a degree in biomedical engineering.
Matthew Sweeney, Maclay (Tallahassee) – Matthew has a 4.0 grade point average and was recognized as an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction. Playing five sports throughout high school, Matthew was a member of the soccer, tennis, football, swimming and cross country teams during his time in high school. He was named to the 3A All-State football team, as well as the All-State soccer team. Matthew’s service to the community included numerous hours at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Maclay Summer Camps and coaching community sports. Matthew will be attending Stetson University in Deland to pursue a degree in mathematics and finance.
David Trigg, University Christian (Jacksonville) –With a 3.85 grade point average, David ranks sixth in a senior class of 52 students. Earning three varsity letters, David was a member of the football, track and field and wrestling teams. As an athlete, he was a state champion in football and a district champion in wrestling, also qualifying for the state meet. His total of 220 community service hours includes time with the March of Dimes as well as various activities with the clubs he was involved with. David has decided to attend Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia but has not yet chosen a major.
