GAINESVILLE – Mother Nature ruined opening night for both the visiting Florida Deaf Dragons and the host Oak Hall Eagles, but not before both teams were able to get some points on the board.
Things got started with the Dragons getting the ball to start and was able to march down the field on a 14-play drive eating up 6:30 of the first quarter game clock with RB Cedric Scott punching it from 4-yards out with 5:30 left on the clock. However, the attempted 2-point conversion was no good, putting the Dragons up 6-0.
Determined not to let things get out-of-hand like Oak Hall has done in the past, the Eagles were able to put together a seven-play drive that was capped off by K Evan Moorhouse 42-yard field goal with 1:58 left it the first quarter.
The Dragons got the ball back, but quickly fumbled the ball away back to the Eagles which was recovered by DB Trent Phillips. It only took five quick plays for the Eagles to capitalize on the first of two turnovers made Florida Deaf, as ATH Chase Trunnell who punched in from the 1-yard line with only four seconds ticked off the second quarter clock.
The final score of the half came when Oak Hall got the back from Florida Deaf after forcing a three and out and returning the punt to the Florida Deaf 23. The very next play the Eagles cashed in at the end zone on an 18-yard hook up from QB Matt Armstrong to WR Jackson Carey.
The half was capped when Chance Mayo intercepted a pass for Oak Hall at their own 15-yard line allowing the Eagles to run the clock out to go in the locker room with 16-6 lead over the Dragons.
However, the second half was not to be on Thursday night as Mother Nature turned things from nice to nasty as the lightning was detected 3.8 miles from the school.
From there the weather got worse with the teams deciding to suspend the game until Tuesday, September 8 when it will resume again at Oak Hall. Time of the restart was unavailable at the time of the announcement, but will start with the third quarter when play resumes.
