FHSAA officially sets points system for new playoff format going into 2017

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida High School Athletic Association has officially set the points that will be used for the 2017 and 2018 football seasons, the first two under the new playoff system that was approved by the FHSAA Board of Directors in 2018.

On a link, posted to the FHSAA Football’s page on Friday, officially shows the number of points teams will earn for each win or loss based upon one of four categories.

The points each team will get per win depending on the category their opponents fall into based upon record will remain set as it was initially released in the plan when it was approved with Category 1 wins receiving 50 points, Category 2 wins receiving 45 points, Category 3 wins receiving 40 points and Category 4 wins receiving 35 points.

However, the FHSAA has adjusted the points that each team will receive for each loss depending on the category their opponents fall into based upon each team’s record.

Instead of receiving 35 points for a Category 1 loss, teams will now receive only 30 points for that loss. Category 2 loss drops from 30 points to 25 points, Category 3 loss drops from 25 points to 20 points, and a Category 4 loss drops 20 points to 15 points.

In addition to the changes on the points themselves, teams will now get rewarded with three bonus points for each team they schedule for 2017 and 2018 that reached the playoffs in either 2015 or 2016. The bonus points will carry over for both years. Teams that schedule teams from outside the state will also get bonus points for that team if they made their respective state association’s playoffs. Only three bonus points will be given per team on the schedule that made the playoff regardless if they made it for both years or just one of the two years.
