2025 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE ANALYSIS: Venice goes on title defense with another tough schedule on deck

OVERVIEW

If anything has shown us the last few years about the Venice Indians, it is their ability to schedule tough and back it up with deep playoff runs that are capped off with an appearance at the state championships. With a state championship trophy coming home back in December, the Indians are looking to add their fifth state championship during the 2025 season. With a relatively weak district in District 7A-8, the Indians make up for that with the non-district schedule. Let’s take a deeper look at the schedule with our analysis.

STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE

Venice will enter with an SOS of .596 based on their opponents' last three years of records combined, with the 2024 season weighing in the heaviest. The toughest opponent might be defending Class 3A state champion Miami Northwestern (12-2), who should have Teddy Bridgewater and company back and ready to compete for another state championship. IMG Academy’s National team will also be a tough opponent. The easiest opponents will be the district foes, especially Lehigh (1-9) and Sarasota (3-7), making up the easiest opponents on the slate. And compared to the 2024 schedule, have things gotten harder? We say they are the same with the schedule already setup to test the Indians.

KEY GAMES & MUST-WATCH MATCHUPS

Over the years, as Venice has grown dominant, the Indians do not carry as much in the schedule in terms of having a consistent rivalry game as Manatee, who had been a consistent rival but has not been on the Indians’ schedule over the last few years. The closest rivalry we can even think of is Riverview (Sarasota), but that also comes as being their toughest and most important district game which will come in Week 8. If you are looking for tough non-district opponents, take any of the teams in the first five weeks of the season, and you will have a top non-district matchup with Tampa Bay Tech, Miami Northwestern, Bishop Verot, Port Charlotte, and The First Academy alone fitting the bill in this one.

HOME VS. AWAY BALANCE

Considering that Powell-Davis Stadium is one of the most electrifying environments anyone can play in, you can only sense why the Indians try to have as many home games as possible, and they will do that with a seven-home game slate, only having to get out on the road three times. And that does not even count the kickoff classic against Gadsden County, the Class 2A state runner-up from last year. Looking at the schedule, the start of the regular season is one book end of the road trips with back-to-back trips on the docket to Tampa Bay Tech and down to Miami’s Traz Powell Stadium to take on Miami Northwestern. The trip to Miami will be the Indians’ longest at 204 miles. The Indians will benefit with all seven home games coming in consecutive weeks from Week 3 until Week 9.

OPPONENT BREAKDOWN

The Indians will have five opponents who reached the playoffs in 2024 on the schedule. Two of those opponents reached the state championship game, with Miami Northwestern winning Class 3A and Clearwater Central Catholic finishing as the Class 1A state runner-up. They also have nationally ranked IMG Academy on the schedule, which traditionally plays in post-season bowl games as it is not eligible for an FHSAA state championship that could technically make them a sixth opponent that was a playoff team on the schedule. While no out-of-state games are on the Indians’ schedule for 2025, The First Academy (Orlando) replaces Cocoa on this year's schedule as the only change compared to the 2024 schedule.

BYE WEEK PLACEMENT

Oh, the bye week… it comes in Week 11, and for the Indians who will play hard in each of their 10 games, this is positioned perfectly for them to get some rest before a possible deep playoff–state championship run commences. And with the Universal Bye Week now added to the schedule for 2025 – a bye week only to be used for make-up games due to Florida’s characteristic of thunderstorms and a hurricane or two during the fall – the Indians could end up with two straight weeks of rest, and if they do will need to make sure they don’t get too complacent on that rest.

PLAYOFF IMPLICATIONS

Well, as we mentioned earlier, the most important district game is going to be the one with Riverview. If the Rams show any massive signs of improvement or are near the level of competition, that would be trouble for the Indians. All of the non-district games with Tampa Bay Tech, Miami Northwestern, Bishop Verot, Port Charlotte, The First Academy, IMG Academy National, and Clearwater Central Catholic will certainly boost Venice's resume. It is rare we can say that about a team, but head coach John Peacock only wants the best for the Indians, and he goes out and makes the best schedule possible year in and year out. In the end, we see Venice nabbing the No. 1 seed once more in Class 7A-Region 2.

PREDICTED RECORD & FINAL THOUGHTS

Considering that it seemed there was a lack of defense early on in the season last year where high schools ran the gamut in the first five weeks and the fact it took overtime against Miami Northwestern, a 9-1 regular season is likely the best case scenario if the Indians were to find a way to either beat the Bulls at Traz Powell Stadium or come up with a in over IMG Academy. I am hesitant to say 10-0 is the best-case scenario, given the history from last year. Now, what is the worst-case scenario? Honestly, 8-2 and that being the Indians drop games against Miami Northwestern and IMG Academy given that for most of the other opponents on the home slate, playing at Powell-Davis is going to be a very tough challenge. For 2025, I see things lining up to the best-case scenario with a 9-1 overall record.
