WHAT I KNEW
Both teams finished the 2011 season with 10-3 records. Aquinas lost in the Class 7A regional finals to Dwyer. Columbus lost in the Class 8A state final to Miramar. The last time these schools played was just 8 weeks shy of 49 years ago. Columbus had senior leadership with Daryl Chestnut and Lorenzo Woodley at running back and Jesus Wilson at wide receiver. However, they were starting new, young sophomore QB Tucker Beirne. St. Thomas would have a new full time QB using John O’Korn, while Fred Coppet would receive more responsibility at running back. Joey Bosa would be the most familiar name on the defensive line.
WHAT I LEARNED
O’Korn (STA) looked much sharper as he played in a situation where he can show balance. The ability to throw for 164 yards and run for 112 yards was very different from when I saw him in game situations last year where he was forced to throw on nearly every down. Coppet (STA) did not disappoint with 147 yards rushing and a touchdown catch. He seemed to benefit from the increased touches throughout the game. However, I will remember him more for a block he made in the backfield during the first quarter which I expect to see in all of his recruiting films.
Beirne (COL) needed a quarter to get settled down by beginning the game 0-6. He would finish the rest of the game 12-20 for 187 yards. Despite throwing three interceptions he showed a lot of poise which was exemplified during the team’s 99 yard scoring drive in the third quarter. Wilson’s (COL) 138 yards receiving and 41 yards rushing along with Chestnut’s (COL) 159 yards rushing showed me both players will play often at the next level.
WHAT I EXPECT
Both teams have a lot of talent and will contend in their respective classes. However, both schools have tough games during the following two weeks. St. Thomas plays Cypress Bay and Bosco Prep (N.J.) and Columbus plays Belen Jesuit and Southridge.
