TALLAHASSEE – Gene Cox Stadium played the role of jungle Friday night as the two big cats of the city played. The Godby Cougars hosted the Leon Lions. Godby came away with bragging rights this year winning 50-9.
Cougars QB J.T. Bradwell flexed his muscle all night to come away with the best stats of the night. He threw for over 150 yards and four touchdowns. Also he ran over 100 yards.
“They did what they wanted all night long. Their system is set up for getting players in space to create for themselves,” said Lions coach Tim Cokley.
Godby started the night a little slower than last week’s performance but still got out to a good lead. They were able to rattle off 23 unanswered points.
Bradwell connected early and often with WR Anthony “PJ” Simmons. They were able to lead the Cougars down the field on their first two scores before a field goal and touchdown were scored respectively.
Also in the mix in the first half was RB Kenny Young. He was able to run for over 75 yards on the night with one touchdown.
For the Cougars the first half score was a result of four scores in six possessions.
The Lions struggled the whole night to put anything together. Their two QB system between DeAnfernee McGriff and Darius Bradwell was shut down the whole night. Leon seemed to be overwhelmed by the speed of the Cougars.
Upon the opening of the second half it was more Cougar football.
The Cougars started the third quarter scoring on their first two possessions. Both on Bradwell tosses. One came on a screen on run while the other was a fake screen that the Lions secondary jumped and left a wide receiver open for a long touchdown pass.
“We moved past last week’s victory. This is a new team. Some new players. New opponent. We have to remained focused on the task at hand,” said Godby head coach Ronnie Cottrell.
Another note to take was the limited but effective play of WR/ATH Jaylen Heyward. He had only three touches on the night, but made the most of them. He ran for 95 yards and two touchdowns. Both came on 40 plus yard carries. One touchdown came on a 45 yard reverse flip that he took to the house.
The win for Godby marks the third victory by 50 points or more this season.
Godby will enter into district play next week against Wakulla. The Cougars move to 3-1 on the season. For the Lions they will drop to 2-2 on the season. Next up for Leon will be a visit to Famu DRS. Both games will take place at 7pm.
