TALLAHASSEE – District 7A-2 was on display Friday night at Gene Cox stadium. The Lincoln Trojans hosted the Chiles Timberwolves in an inner city duel. Lincoln was able to defeat Chiles 44-14.
The Trojans were coming off a tough loss the previous week to another Tallahassee school, the Rickards Raiders in a three overtime thriller, and were looking to get back to their winning ways.
Few Trojan players had anything to say during warm ups, but they did have the eye of the tiger to get the job done this week.
For Chiles it was a chance to string together back to back wins for the first time this season. They were coming off a two point win from last week against Marianna.
The first quarter saw lots of action … from the punters of both teams. They combined for over 200 yards on six first quarter punts.
But the Trojans were the first to strike with 50.5 seconds left in the opening stanza. RB Matthew Donaldson ran in a touchdown from 8 yards out.
Lincoln took an off balance approach on their next drive opting to go run then pass on every other play. It led to another Donaldson touchdown run. This time it was from 17 yards out.
The Timberwolves did capture lightning in a bottle after a great kickoff return from WR Jonathan Scaringe. QB Trey Melvin linked up with underclassman WR Marcus Holton for a 40 yard passing touchdown. After missing the extra point Chiles trailed by only a touchdown and two point conversion.
Not soon after the Trojans went strictly to the air. QB Darius Harvey hooked up with WR John Burt twice for long scores. The scores came with 3:02 left in the half and then again at 1:02 left in the half. The yardage accounted for was 85 yards total on the two passing touchdowns.
At halftime the Trojans lead 30 to 6 over the Timberwolves.
Coming out after the half the Trojans received the ball. Junior WR Willis McDaniel took no time kick starting the Trojans. He returned the Timberwolves second half opening kick 83 yards for a touchdown.
Chiles did although answer with a six play 67 yard drive aided by penalties to score. A Trey Melvin to Bin Brown connection resulted in a touchdown. Plus a two point conversion it brought the Timberwolves to within three scores.
But once again RB Matthew Donaldson rumbled down the field and into the end zone for another Trojan score. It capped of a 69 yard and 3 touchdown night for the Trojan back.
Aside from late game penalties and a late 65 yard run by Cedric Tryman of the Trojans it all but closed out the game.
Next up for Lincoln is a much earned bye week. As for Chiles they will look to get back on the winning trail against Jacksonville Potter’s House next Friday. The game will start at 7pm.
