An alum who has surrounded the Warner Christian program as a player and assistant coach is going to get his crack at coaching the high successful program.
D.J. Mayo was hired on Monday by the South Daytona private school to lead the program to the next level, the Daytona Beach News-Journal reported.
Mayo replaces Steve Allen who was dismissed after going 20-4 in his two seasons at the helm. The main reason Allen was dismissed was due to the fact that he was not on campus full-time.
With the hiring of Mayo, he brings with him coaching experience that includes stops as assistant that includes Warner Christian, Atlantic in Port Orange, and as the head coach of Chamberlain High in Tampa. Mayo went 4-6 in 2012, his only season with the Chamberlain program.
However, this past football season, Mayo has been an assistant at Warner University in Lake Wales, where helped recruit Volusia County players to the program as well as helping coordinate the quarterbacks and special teams. But in the end he was not seriously looking to reenter the high school ranks, but the Warner Christian was a job he would take if it came open, according to reports.
Mayo hopes his experiences with the school pay off towards one goal: A state championship
“I was part of our first win. I was the starting quarterback. Then, I was part of our first winning season. Then, I was an assistant for our first district championship. My goal now is to be the coach when we win a state championship,” he told the News-Journal.
Warner Christian has not missed the playoffs since 1999, according to the FHSAA Football Record Book and has appeared in three overall state championship finals between 2008 and 200 in the former Class 1B classification, walking away as the state runner-up in all three games.
Mayo becomes just the third head coach for the Eagles program since the 1998 season.
