ST. AUGUSTINE – St. Augustine defeated Bishop Kenny 23-14 in their spring game in front fans and visiting coaches from various colleges.
The Yellow Jackets used a balanced attack to defeat the visiting Crusaders. Quarterback Cole Northrup went 13-17 for 161 yards, one touchdown and one interception while running back Patrick Stewart had eight carries for 121 yards and one touchdown in the first half as both squads removed their starters at halftime.
Northrup led the Yellow Jackets up and down the field in a solid offensive showing by the Yellow Jackets starter in the first half.
Stewart rushed for a 66 yard touchdown run where he broke several tackles before leaving a trail of Crusader defenders behind.
Wide Receiver Fred Gilliam led the receivers with five catches for 68 yards and a touchdown.
Bishop Kenny Quarterback Anthony Farmon had a solid showing at the helm of the Crusader attack. Farmon went 6-9 for 117 yards, one touchdown and one interception. All six of Farmon’s completions went to Wide Receiver Charles Wade. Wade was explosive with the ball after the catch.
However, Bishop Kenny was not able to run the ball on the stingy, swarming Yellow Jacket defense.
Defensively for the Yellow Jackets linebackers Michael Isaacs and Connor Evans combined for 11 tackles while Evans added an interception. Defensive lineman Kevon Dailey also had five tackles on the night.
The Crusaders defense was led by safety Trey Langlois who had six tackles and an acrobatic interception on the one yard line to keep the Yellow Jackets out of the end zone.
St. Augustine High Coach Joey Wiles saw two things in particular that impressed him from his Yellow Jackets.
“Our work ethic will be a strength of ours. I’m really proud of the progress of our young line,” Wiles said.
