SOUTH DAYTONA – Warner Christian will have a new head coach for the third season in a row once the season starts in August.
According to the Daytona Beach News-Journal yesterday, head coach DJ Mayo stepped down after taking the team 6-5 this past season that included reaching the state semifinals where they were defeated by eventual Class 2A state champion Victory Christian.
Mayo who is an alum of Warner Christian that also played for the football team told the News-Journal that he stepped down because he “wasn’t able to prepare the team adequately in the offseason.” He cited that the football class was cut from the academic offerings during the last semester of the school year.
Mayo replaced Steven Allen last year after he lead the team for two seasons that went 20-4 and before Allen was led by current Spruce Creek head coach Andy Price who left to go to Titusville for one year in 2012. Warner Christian’s last state championship appearance came in 2010 where the Eagles fell to Glades Day in the Class 1B state championship game.
The school hopes to move quickly on hiring a new football coach, the report indicates.
