Here is a look at five games we thought were upsets from Week 2 and what we are feeling on some teams at this particular point.
Gainesville 31, First Coast 26 – The Purple Hurricanes took a big risk by putting First Coast on the schedule this season, but the risk has turned into reward. First Coast, ranked No. 7 in the FloridaHSFootball.com Class 7A rankings, the Buccaneers could never seem to find that it would take to top Gainesville and get out of Citizens Field with the win. It also should be noted that head coach Marty Lee was not on the sideline for this game for First Coast. For Gainesville, this could go down as possibly their strongest win after losing 57-38 last week to Columbia who is currently ranked No. 10 in our Class 7A rankings, so the bounce back was nice for Gainesville.
Escambia 28, Niceville 24 – Well it took 20 years to get a win against Niceville, but this could go down as the win of the year for Escambia. What also makes this win sweeter for Escambia is that it came at home on Emmett Smith Field. Escambia should certainly be ranked across the board going into next weeks rankings with the FloridaHSFootball.com rankings and the AP rankings. Escambia was ranked No. 8 while Niceville was ranked No. 4 in our rankings this week in Class 6A.
Mandarin 41, Ed White 7 – Ed White has certainly sunk to a new low after having won six straight against Mandarin going back to 2008 when Mandarin won the last time in the series. The Mustangs have certainly showed great form and are a total different team under Brian Braddock. It is not surprising that Joey Wiles’ coaching tree has spawned a great coach in Braddock and there is a serious chance that Mandarin is a playoff contender this year. For Ed White, the team that was once on the mountain top last year, is totally gone. It would not be surprising if the Commanders finish under .500 this year.
Crescent City 40, The Villages 37 – Crescent City has started the year with a bang and managed to pull the upset over a larger Villages program to move to 2-0 on the season. Winning this game by three points and upsetting a Class 4A team will certainly draw some attention in for your team. The Villages should have had won this game against their former district rival, but it was not to be and this will certainly sting for the Buffaloes going into Week 3.
Brooks County, GA 27, Madison County 0 – Even if the game was shortened by lightning, an 0-2 Brooks County Trojans team literally showed Madison County that they were not going to go into Quitman and get their first win of the season. Instead, the Cowboys now have to come back to Madison and figure out what their game plan will be heading into Week 3 as the district schedule will start in the next couple of weeks. Basically it has been a rough first two weeks for the Cowboys who are still scheduling a tough schedule despite being in Class 1A now. Could be had for Madison County to get their No. 5 ranking in FloridaHSFootball.com’s Class 1A rankings going into Week 3.
