JACKSONVILLE – The Episcopal Eagles and Cedar Creek Christian Saints got together on Friday night to get a look at their 2016 teams in action for the first time. The result wasn’t pretty – a 37-7 rout in favor of the Eagles. Although spring games don’t count against your win-loss record, Cedar Creek Christian would like to just put the game behind them and move on to the fall.
Multiple turnovers and an anemic passing game led to a rough day for the Saints. The only bright spot on offense was the play of running back Bernard Evans, who displayed toughness and great vision the entire game.
When asked what his team has to do to improve over the summer and get ready for the regular season, Cedar Creek head coach Jamie Gamel stated that “the good thing about tonight is that we weren’t beat up physically, weren’t out-manned, there was just a lot of self-inflicted wounds. The same thing happened to us in the last year’s spring game.”
Despite some shaky offensive-line play early, Episcopal rebounded extremely well and was able to put together some nice touchdown drives. The play of rising seniors, quarterback JoJo Brunell and tight end Adam Boselli seem to point that the tandem will be quite a force to reckon with come this fall. The pair also connected for two scores through the air.
Even though the team capped off the spring with a victory, head coach Mark Brunell knows there is still work to do for the fall.
“We have to continue to work hard this summer. We have to be diligent to our lifting and conditioning. We’ll do a lot of 7-on7’s and work with our skill guys. We have a lot of work to do until August,” Brunell said.
