FLAG FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: St. Thomas Aquinas nabs first win in program history

ST. THOMAS AQUINAS NABS FIRST WIN IN PROGRAM HISTORY

Everyone knows about the history of St. Thomas Aquinas’ sports programs including the 13 championships in tackle football, but history was made for the Raiders on the opening day of the 2022 season with a victory to start the era of flag football at the Fort Lauderdale-based school.

The Raiders, being led by Derek Duque who found previous success at Miami Gardens Monsignor Pace, led his team to victory No. 1 with a 13-0 shutout on the road over Miami Braddock in an afternoon tilt.

Kamryn Corporan led the way for the Raiders with an interception return for a touchdown in the 2nd quarter while scoring on a 20-yard touchdown reception in the 3rd quarter to help bring home the victory against the Bulldogs.

St. Thomas Aquinas (1-0) will host Miami Norland (1-0) on Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. at Brian Piccolo Stadium in Fort Lauderdale while Braddock will travel to Miami Southridge on Tuesday afternoon for a tilt with the Spartans.

LAKE WEIR BLASTS NORTH MARION ON THE ROAD

The Lake Weir Hurricanes opened the season with a convincing 31-0 victory over the Colts from North Marion with Erilynn Beltre scoring on three touchdown runs to lead the team in the game at Stan Toole Stadium in Sparr.

Head coach Fred Anderson reported that the team was very focused to open the season and racked up six interceptions during the game while Beltre took control of the offense by moving the ball down the field with her runs to keep drives alive.

Lake Weir (1-0) will travel to Inverness to take on Citrus Tuesday night with the tilt slated for 6 p.m.

Tonight, Lake Weir Flag football team opened the season with a 31 to 0, shutout over North Marion. The defense was lights out, with 6 interceptions. Tomorrow we travel to Citrus. 1 and 0, looking to keep the streak going.

SPANISH RIVER BLOWS PAST OLYMPIC HEIGHTS

The Spanish River Sharks are already looking like they are at midseason form despite it being the season opener, defeating crosstown foe Olympic Heights with a convincing 52-0 victory over the Lions.

The statement was made early in the game with a 33-point first-quarter followed up by 13 more points in the third quarter

Quarterback Gianna Pacitti led the Sharks with 5 touchdown passes and only had one interception the entire game while Kaitlyn Ruiz had 3 sacks on the night as well as one rushing touchdown. Juliana Enciso and Mya Quin led the team in interceptions with each having 3 interceptions on the night while Maya Salas had an interception return for a touchdown.

Spanish River (1-0) will host Davie Western on Tuesday night in what will be one of the top matchups of the week in South Florida.

CENTENNIAL UPENDS ST. CLOUD IN REMATCH FROM 2021 PLAYOFFS

To open the season, Centennial picked up where they left off at and that was leaving it all on the field against St. Cloud where they lost by one point in the regional semifinals in 2021.

However, in that return trip to St. Cloud, things turned out to be almost the same exact way with the final possession and extra point determining the winner, this time going in the favor of the Eagles to start off the 2022 season on the right note with a 26-25 victory.

The biggest stat of the night for Centennial was the connection from Olivia Kaes to Tamay Heath who hooked up on touchdown passes of 66, 14, and 38 yards while Heath added a 62-yard interception return to her stat sheet for the night.

Centennial (1-0) will travel to Treasure Coast on Thursday afternoon for their second game of the season.

WELLINGTON TURNS BACK PAHOKEE

The Wellington Wolverines (1-0) turned Pahokee back down State Road 80 with a 44-0 shutout victory led by Keelin Coleman’s four total touchdowns (2 rushing, 2 passing) to get the 2022 season started.

The Wolverines started things off with a 40-yard Isabella Esteves punt return for a touchdown to take an early 6-0 lead before Noelle Pride named a 30-yard interception return for a touchdown early in the second quarter to put the score at 12-0.

Wellington will take a long break off with spring break scheduled for next week before returning to the field after March 20.

Opened the season with a 44-0 win over Pahokee, not we wait 2 weeks until the next one.
