With the approach of the day coming for the Florida High School Athletic Association to release the newest classifications and districts after the controversial 9-4 vote last week to approve moving football back to eight classifications using enrollment as the only way to divide schools up into classifications and also separate 9-4 vote to require mandated district play in all classifications except Class Rural, we here at FloridaHSFootball.com have decided to project out what things might look like for the next two years in Florida.

Notes to understand how we came up with our projections for classifications and districts:

  • No school committed to the Sunshine State Athletic Association (SSAA) in the previous two years was included for the FHSAA State Series. Our understanding from multiple sources is no school in the SSAA currently across all their 11-man divisions are seeking to be in the FHSAA state series based on our projections.
  • The schools that committed to the SSAA before the release of this were also removed from possibly being in the FHSAA State Series for 2024 based on our projections.
  • One school that has been in districts the last few years announced they would play independent the next cycle and thus were already removed from FHSAA State Series consideration by our projections.
  • A group of public schools in Miami-Dade County in the last two years were not included as the schools have been vocal about not being a district due to the disadvantages of they foresee with competition from other programs in Miami-Dade County. We kept those teams independent based on our projections.
  • Some independent teams from last year could jump into the FHSAA series for 2024 and 2025. We have included those programs in our projections.
  • We divided all the schools up evenly as possible after we pulled the smallest 32 schools out for Class Rural. Bell and Bronson are not included in the smallest 32 schools for rural as those schools were in the SSAA last year and appear to be committed to the SSAA again for the next cycle. We also did not include Fort Meade or Moore Haven for the smallest 32 schools for Class Rural as those schools have traditionally chosen not to opt-in for the rural classification status even though they are eligible for the smallest 32 teams to be in Class Rural.
  • We are providing projections based on a 16-district model and a 12-district model as there have been some rumors circulating that the FHSAA is looking into possibly fewer districts to make the districts larger to eliminate three and four-team districts. While there have also been rumors of talks of possibly an 8-district model per classification, we do not see that as a likely option.

PROJECTED CLASSIFICATIONS & ENROLLMENTS

7A – 2,530 and up – 64
6A – 2,180 to 2,539 – 65
5A – 1,855 to 2,179 – 63
4A – 1,590 to 1,854 – 64
3A – 1,265 to 1,589 – 64
2A – 670 to 1,264 – 64
1A – 1 to 669 – 63
RURAL – 1 to 589 – 32
