The first of two games on the New Year’s Day slate of games in the College Football Playoff Quarter Final put the Texas Longhorns against the Arizona State Sun Devils in the Chick-FIl-A Peach Bowl in Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Dome. The Longhorns are coming off a 38-24 win at home in the first round against the Clemson Tigers while Arizona State got the first round bye by virtue of being one of the four best conference champions. In total, there were 10 Florida HS Football Alumni between the two teams.
The game itself started as a game that looked like a Longhorn runaway before Arizona State staged a dramatic comeback in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime. Arizona State’s Cam Skattebo left a major impression on the ground and through the air in more ways than one. In fact, with just minutes to go in regulation, Skattebo had more all-purpose yards than the entire Texas offense. Skattebo’s surprising touchdown pass ended up into the hands of IMG Academy alum Malik McClain for a 42 yard score. The Longhorns would come away with the 39-31 victory in double overtime after Andrew Mukuba grabbed an interception inside the five yard line during the Arizona State possession.
