2025 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE ANALYSIS: Manatee upping the ante this fall with competitive schedule

OVERVIEW

Manatee was just a matter of three points away from playing in the Class 5A state championship last season. Now, the challenge is on as the Hurricanes will test themselves in 2025, looking for their first trip to the state title game since 2011 when the last won it all. Let’s look at their schedule and see just how good Manatee’s schedule is for this fall.

Week 5 – Fri. 9/19: vs. IMG Academy White (Bradenton)

Week 6 – Fri. 9/26: at Pinellas Park (Largo)*

Week 7 – Fri. 10/3: at Columbia (Lake City)

Week 8 – Fri. 10/10: BYE WEEK

Week 9 – Fri. 10/17: at Palmetto

Week 10 – Fri. 10/24: vs. Braden River (Bradenton)*

Week 11 – Fri. 10/31: vs. Riverview (Sarasota)*

STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE

If we do a little digging back to last year, Manatee saw a couple of games get claimed in the process due to the cycle of hurricanes, especially with Hurricane Milton wiping out a couple of games on the Hurricanes’ schedule. If we take that and look at the changes made to the schedule, we will find Manatee just made it even tougher, and that is what head coach Jacquez Green wants. With a strength of schedule of .589, the Hurricanes will see their toughest game right out of the gate when St. John Bosco makes the trip to Bradenton in Week 1. Who could be the easiest opponent? Well, it really is hard to pick an easy opponent, but if we had to choose one, it would be against long-time rival Southeast in Week 2.

KEY GAMES & MUST-WATCH MATCHUPS

As we have already mentioned, the rivalry with Southeast will be Manatee’s biggest rivalry game for the season and has been on the schedule for many years. The most important district game for the Hurricanes will be the one against Pinellas Park in Week 6, which they also defeated in the regional quarterfinals in 2024. The top non-district matchup will be the one against St. John Bosco, as it will have massive implications for the national rankings.

HOME VS. AWAY BALANCE

Manatee will play six games at home and only four on the road. Three of those road games will be played over a four-week stretch from last September to mid-October, with the bye week sandwiched in that stretch with games at Pinellas Park, Columbia, and Palmetto on the docket. The longest trip will be the one come Week 3 when the Hurricanes loaded the buses for the 282-mile trip to Valdosta when they take on a much-improved Lowndes program, the only team the Hurricanes lost to in the regular season last year.

OPPONENT BREAKDOWN

When it comes to playing perennial playoff powers, the Hurricanes do not shy away from them. Six teams reached the playoffs in Florida and Georgia in 2024. We would say it is seven if IMG Academy White were playoff eligible and another opponent that is just as strong among the teams that did reach the playoffs. As we have already talked about, St. John Bosco is one of two new opponents on the schedule this year, with the addition of Columbia being the other new addition to the schedule. St. John Bosco replaces a game with Lake Minneola, while Columbia replaces Benjamin, the latter which did not end up playing Manatee last year due to Hurricane Milton. St. John Bosco and Lowndes represent as out-of-state opponents on the schedule.

BYE WEEK PLACEMENT

The bye week will come in Week 9, which is a bit later than having it towards the middle of the season. Will the bye week at Week 9 help or hurt Manatee? It is likely neither for them but having the rest after the second of three road trips will certainly be useful.

PLAYOFF IMPLICATIONS

The playoff implications of Manatee's schedule are huge. The games against St. John Bosco and Lowndes will certainly boost the Hurricanes’ resume early in the season. However, the district game with Pinellas Park is the district game that matters most out of the two district games that Manatee is required to play. If anything, Manatee’s schedule could have them looking at taking the No. 1 seed in Class 5A-Region 3, even if they take on one or two losses throughout the season.

PREDICTED RECORD & FINAL THOUGHTS

The best-case scenario for Manatee is a perfect 10-0 record, with them winning every single game, and the worst-case scenario is no worse than 6-4. However, confidence says that Manatee will likely go 8-2, with losses coming most likely against either St. John Bosco, Lowndes, Buchholz, or even Columbia.
