We take a closer look at six matchups that stood out across the South Florida region, highlighting big moments, key performances, and games that kept fans talking.
CARDINAL GIBBONS VS SOUTH BROWARD – CANCELED
Thunderstorms forced the cancellation of Friday’s matchup between Cardinal Gibbons (0-1) and South Broward (1-0) with no makeup date currently scheduled. Both teams will turn their attention to their next scheduled opponents for Week 2 while they work towards a planned rescheduled in Week 6.
OUR LADY OF GOOD COUNSEL 14, COLUMBUS 7
The Falcons held off visiting Columbus (1-1) in Friday’s defensive battle in Olney, Maryland. … Our Lady of Good Counsel controlled the contest against the Explorers, limiting their offense while generating enough scoring to secure the victory. … The Falcons defense held Columbus to seven points in the low-scoring affair. … Columbus will host St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday in a matchup of two of South Florida’s top tier teams.
MIAMI CENTRAL 50, MIAMI EDISON 12
The Rockets (1-0) dominated visiting Miami Edison (1-1) in Saturday’s lopsided victory, controlling the contest from the second quarter onward. … Miami Central broke open a scoreless first quarter by scoring 28 points in the second period to take command against the Red Raiders. … Edison managed six points in both the second and fourth quarters but could not match the Rockets’ offensive production. … Miami Central added 22 points in the final quarter to put the game away and secure the convincing victory. … The Rockets outscored Edison by 38 points in the decisive Miami-Dade County rivalry matchup between the crosstown programs.
WEST BOCA RATON 50, PALM BEACH CENTRAL 7
Senior running back Javian Mallory rushed for 119 yards and three touchdowns on eight carries while junior Anderson Gracilien added 95 rushing yards on seven attempts as defending Class 6A champion West Boca Raton (1-0) overwhelmed visiting Palm Beach Central (0-2) in Thursday’s season opener. … The Bulls accumulated 329 rushing yards on 30 carries for an 11.0-yard average, with junior Quinton Miller Jr contributing 48 yards and one touchdown while junior Jayden Lockhart added 22 yards and one score. … Palm Beach Central senior quarterback Chance Routson completed 14 of 33 passes for 93 yards and one touchdown but was limited to 16 rushing yards on four carries by the Bulls defense. … Senior Antoine Perry caught four passes for 27 yards and one touchdown to lead the Broncos’ receiving attack, while junior Jayden St. Fort hauled in five receptions for 47 yards. … West Boca Raton’s defense forced two turnovers and limited Palm Beach Central to 139 total yards while recording seven tackles for loss in the dominant victory.
CAMDEN COUNTY 32, WEST BROWARD 13
The Bobcats fell to host Camden County in Friday’s road contest, unable to match the Wildcats’ offensive production in the inter-state matchup. … West Broward managed 13 points against Camden County’s defense but struggled to contain junior quarterback William Jackson, who threw for 212 yards and two touchdowns while adding a rushing score. … The Bobcats were outgained by a Camden County offense that accumulated 406 total yards, led by senior Antwan Williams (90 rushing yards) and senior Julian Dailey (82 rushing yards). … West Broward’s defense faced a balanced attack as Jackson connected with junior Sean Green for 86 yards and one touchdown while senior David Coleman Jr added a 71-yard scoring reception. … The Bobcats will look to regroup after allowing three sacks and 14 tackles for loss to the Wildcats in the disappointing road defeat.
SANTALUCES VS PALM BEACH GARDENS – SUSPENDED
Lightning forced the suspension of Friday’s contest between Santaluces (0-1) and Palm Beach Gardens (0-1) with 7:37 remaining and the Gators leading 21-14. The Chiefs had built a 14-0 advantage before Palm Beach Gardens rallied with 21 unanswered points to take control. The game will resume on September 8th with Santaluces in possession on the Palm Beach Gardens 40-yard line to complete the suspended contest.
