DEFUNIAK SPRINGS | Its official now: Jimmy Ray Stephens is back in Florida as a high school football head coach (and athletic director).
Stephens, who coached successful teams in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s,, was officially approved by the Walton County School Board on February 28th, the Northwest Florida Daily News reports.
Stephens is well known among the coaching ranks for leading Williston to a state final appearance in the late 1980’s and Fort Walton Beach to a state title in the early 1990’s.
Overall he has a 63-7 record in just six seasons of coaching high school football in Florida.
Stephens is coming to Walton after a 20 year career as an NCAA Division I FBS offensive line coach who had stints at Florida, Tennessee and Middle Tennessee State.
Stephens, who replaces former head coach and athletic director, Bobby Bennett, will officially start his duties on March 15th.
