PENSACOLA | After being let go at Live Oak Suwannee following the 2011 season, Willie Spears appeared to be headed out of state to take a college coaching job in Oklahoma, but that has all changed.
The Pensacola News Journal is reporting that Spears has been named the next head coach at Pensacola Escambia, a once proud program that featured star running back Emmett Smith in the 1980’s.
Spears, who didn’t apply for the job the first time around, applied for in the second opening of the job after the job was turned down by Derrick Boyd, who was the first choice for the school.
Principal Mike Sherrill, who was a former Pensacola Woodham (school closed in 2007) head coach, believes Spears is the perfect fit for the program.
Spears is a graduate of Rutherford High in Panama City and also coached one season at Jefferson County in Monticello. He will start with his official duties and visit the school tomorrow.
