The Norland Vikings ended last season in a celebratory manner. They redeemed themselves from the preceeding season with an undefeated record, while taking the 5A state championship home with ease. Acknowledging the loss of some key players from the Viking squad, many have been in question of their upcoming season.
Do the Vikes have what it takes to contend for the title game, and more so become repeat state champs? No one can know for sure. But what I do know, they have the talent, the dedication, and the coaching needed to do so.
The team ran 1-on1’s, 7-on7’s, and 11-on-11’s in todays full padded practice. I was impressed with both sides of the ball in all drills. The defense is already begininng to portray themselves as a unit, they are a solid team who works together to stop the ball. I especially noticed their quick reads and ability to stuff a run play before the offense gets the chance to open up.
The offense seemed to gel together when the ball was put in the air. Short passes and YAC (yards after catch) assisted them in major advancements downfield. They recorded a great percentage of completeions over incompletions, and a number of the catches were nothing short of exciting raw-talent athletic grabs.
This years squad will be led by a majority of seniors. A large array of diverse talents are spread around the field at different positions, for the upcoming season I advise all teams scheduled to oppose the Vikes to be on the lookout for the following players:
From left to right in the photo:
Joshua Mincey (C/O 2013 OL)
Torrin Young (C/O 2013 DL)
Lakeith Stafford (C/O 2014 RB)
Tyrone Campbell (C/O 2013 SS)
Anari Ragen (C/O 2013 DL)
Trayvon Williams (C/O 2013 LB)
Taron James (C/O 2014 QB)
Overall, Norland is more than definitely still in the runnings. I expect them to do nothing but improve from here on out.
