Here is 5 upsets we didn’t see coming from this weekend.
5. Everglades 20, Cooper City 5
I get to say I rated Cooper City too high in my pre-season ballot for the FloridaHSFootball.com rankings. I was told Cooper City was going to be beatable after last year’s team coming off its best season in school history that included a historic district title victory over St. Thomas Aquinas. As for Everglades with new Head Coach Carlos Menendez he has something to work with now and build upon heading into later in the season with a tough District 12-8A schedule
4. Belleview 38, The Villages 27
You can tell me that the 5A schools should always beat the 1A schools. Not always the case and certainly has not been the case for Belleview in the last few years. Add on to the fact that The Villages has been one of those teams that can play a lot of different teams and win, we wonder what kind of slide The Villages could be or might be on. We will have to wait another few weeks to see if this loss was a fluke or start of a downturn for the Buffalo.
3. Oak Ridge 26, Evans 21
This game hurts Evans in a lot of ways as they were heavily favored to start the season off on the right note. Instead it seems Evans took two steps back while Oak Ridge is taking two steps forward. Oak Ridge which was coming off a spring game that left a lot more questions and than answers, showed up much more prepared and Evans was totally caught off guard by this. Evans can bounce back for sure, but this game will be a lesson to be much better prepared for the unexpected.
2. Hialeah 31, Belen Jesuit 21
One of the key things for Hialeah was to improve from 2011 to 2012 and it had start in Week 1 against Belen Jesuit. The game was mostly a back and forth game for the entire game until the last minutes when Hialeah pulled ahead enough to seal the deal. This game hurts Belen Jesuit in some ways everyone talked about how good they would be. We will have to see if they bounce back from this and see how Hialeah looks as the season goes on to see if this game defines their seasons.
1. Strawberry Crest 21, Plant City 7
Strawberry Crest who? Strawberry Crest from where? OK yes Strawberry Crest, the 6A school located in Dover just outside of Tampa shocked Hillsborough County Saturday night when they took down one of the better teams of recent years. Was Strawberry Crest more prepared than Plant City? Was Plant City thinking that Strawberry Crest was going to be an easy, piece of cake win? We have no idea exactly what went through the minds of both teams, but the story line will be how will this game set the tone for the Chargers for the rest of the season while how the Raiders look to bounce back.
