With the change in scheduling due to Sandy, I had the luxury of attending games I may not have seen this week. Personally, I attended the Plantation – St. Thomas game and the Cardinal Gibbons – American Heritage Plantation game.
Plantation is for real – While the Colonels (6-2; 3-1) lost a tough battle on Saturday at St. Thomas 24-20, this was a game they could have won. They did a great job controlling the line of scrimmage and with the rushing attack of Chris Lammons, Antonio Williams and Jovante Ham, they will give every team in Region 3-7A a challenge. What has become more customary as of late is that opponents entering Brian Piccolo Stadium have no fear and Plantation was no exception. I do expect the Colonels to join St. Thomas in the playoffs.
Playoffs start early for some in 8A – In 12-8A, while Cypress Bay is in prime position to earn the district title, Miramar needs to beat Western Monday night and idle, Flanagan next week. With these two victories, the Patriots would more than likely open the playoffs at South Plantation who is currently undefeated.
Class Act – With the score 7-6, near the end of the 1st quarter, the QB from Cardinal Gibbons was injured after suffering a clean hit from an American Heritage player. While the home, American Heritage parents initially cheered at the play, they soon began to exude well wishes toward the opposing Cardinal Gibbons player when they realized he would remain on the ground for what seemed like several minutes. The Patriots parents would remain quiet only to express jubilation when the Gibbons player was able to reach a standing position. For that moment, this was not a rivalry game. Rather, an opportunity for everyone to act in harmony.
Hot Dogs – In case you are wondering why I have included hot dogs in my article, allow me to share my experience on the American Heritage Plantation campus which I visited for the first time this weekend. After watching QB Tyler Cogswell and RB Sony Michel help lead the Patriots to a 49-6 halftime lead over Cardinal Gibbons I started to get hungry. As a result I had the best hot dog I have tasted in years from their concession. This school understands what foot-long means and the value of gourmet buns. I urge anyone attending their games to try their food.
