TALLAHASSEE – Most homecoming games feature a team of lesser quality for the hosting team. Friday night at Gene Cox stadium the Godby Cougars bucked the trend opting to play the undefeated Trinity Christian Conquerors.

The Cougars did although come away with a homecoming like win … a 42-6 victory.

“This was an embarrassment for us. Just look at scoreboard. I do not care what game it is. We should not be looking like this midway through the season,” said Conquerors head coach Verlon Dorminey.

The night started slow with both teams punting on each of their first two possessions respectively.

Jacob Pugh, Cougars stud linebacker, got into the action early. He not only forced and recovered a first quarter fumble but, also he returned the fumble 37 yards for a touchdown. Pugh finished his night with 8 tackles and the fumble touchdown.

Godby closed the first quarter with a 21-0 lead.

The second quarter looked a lot like the first but was jumpstarted by a razzle dazzle play

Slot back LaDarian Smiley took an option pitch and turned it into a touchdown pass. He managed to find his quarterback Bradwell wide open for the score.

Not soon after lead running back Kenny Young got in on the scoring. He shook, spun and sprinted his way 60 yards for a late second quarter touchdown.

The score marked 35 unanswered points for the Cougars.

Trinity Christian had it rough all night but they were aided by multiple late first half penalties against Godby to score late. The score result came on the arm of Jaquez Riles.

Riles ended his night with 149 yards through the air and 57 on the ground. Also he had one touchdown and two interceptions.

After the halftime coronation for the Godby homecoming court both teams took the field and failed to produce a score.

Entering into the fourth quarter the Cougars were already in scoring position. Running back Kenny Young ran in from 3 yards to put the game on ice.

After the score the clock continued to roll until the end of the game because of the large margin.

Godby’s Kenny Young finished with 97 yards rushing and two touchdowns. J.T. Bradwell finished 7-12 for 241 passing yards, two touchdowns passing and a receiving touchdown.

“We knew we had to take them out early. Last week I was out but my staff kept things rolling. This week it was no change,” said Ronnie Cottrell, head coach for Godby.

Next up for the Cougars is local upstart team, the Rickards Raiders in a key District 5A-2 game. Trinity Christian will have their homecoming as the IMG Academy comes to play. Rickards will kickoff.
