Skinny: Last year these teams met twice – once in the regular and the other time coming in the playoffs. In the first meeting last year Palmetto trounced Port Charlotte, easily running away with the game on their way to a district title. However, in the second meeting, Port Charlotte gave everything they could to Palmetto and almost scored an upset victory in the playoffs. Now coming into this game, the question will be if Port Charlotte’s two-game head start on the season will be a factor for Palmetto who is opening their season this week? That will be the biggest question to answer. For the visiting Pirates, they gave a 56-12 drubbing to DeSoto County. Quarterback Logan Rogers (2021) went only 7-of-8 passing but was effective with 149 yards and with four of the seven completed passes being completed for touchdown receptions. On the receiving end of at least three of those touchdowns was Solomon Luther (2021) who had a total of 111 yards receiving last week. And another key guy for Port Charlotte to keep an eye on is Jakeemis Pelham (2022), who had two rushing touchdowns last week on just two carries for 70 yards. For the host Tigers, several key players to keep an eye on include running back Sagel Hickson (2021) who had 1,245 yards rushing and nine rushing touchdowns as well as four receiving last season as well as offensive lineman Kyjuan Smith (2022) who will be helping opening up holes for Hickson once again this season. Defensive lineman Floyd Dozier (2021) will also be making noise again as he collected up 58 tackles and four sacks last season as well as Jordan Renaud (2023) who had a huge year as a freshman had 50 tackles and eight sacks for the Tigers. Also, keep an eye on safety Jacquez Hughes (2021) as he is coming off of 2019 with 68 tackles and five interceptions.
