Last Meeting
2004: Chaminade-Madonna 35, Bishop Verot 3
Skinny: This will be the first meeting between the two Catholic school programs from opposite coasts in over a decade. In fact, the last time these two met on the field, you will have to go back to 2004 when the Lions thumped the Vikings. However, this year’s meeting is expected to be quite different. Last week the Lions were stunned at home in a 7-3 loss to Plantation American Heritage in what was pretty much a defensive battle. That battle left Thaddius Franklin Jr. (2021), one of the top rushers in the state, out of the end zone, something that does not happen very often in the majority of games played. In fact Franklin was held under 100 yards last week and had nearly 200 the week before in their season opening win over Champagnat Catholic. For the host Vikings last week, they took down Lakeland Christian in a one-point squeaker, 21-20, which was won through a blocked field goal in the final minute of the game. One of the biggest things that was of concern last week was turnovers, which cannot be afford in a game this week with the defending state champions coming into town. Keep an eye on running back Andrew Kelton (2023) who had 144 yards rushing and a touchdown last week in the Vikings’ win as well as quarterback Jacob Azizi (2021) who was 10-of-17 last week for 150 yards and interception plus one rushing touchdown.
