TAVARES | Officially Gavin Jones is out and alum Chris Gauntlett is in as the Tavares head coach in Lake County.
Guantlett who has been the defensive coordinator on Jones’ staff the past three years was very excited for the opportunity for the job in a report from the Orlando Sentinel.
Guantlett, while excited for the opportunity, he always wanted to come back and change the mentality around the program. –
The opening came about due to Jones’ applying for the head coaching job at Eustis that eventually went to Mount Dora assistant Mike Hay. Tavares principal June Dalton wanted someone who had an invested interest in the program and community and that is where she found Gauntlett to be the person to fill the role.
Jones, however blames himself for the mistake of not telling Dalton about his application for the Eustis program, but his thankful for the opportunity that he did have with the program, the report indicated.
Jones will finish with a 12-17 record, but he could remain around the Bulldogs program as an assistant, a move that is wait to be seen.
