As we embrace gender equity and celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Title IX, we open the discussion of 11-8A, South Plantation reserve QB, Erin Dimeglio. Erin’s story was brought to my attention by this well written article from the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Many of us learned that U.S. Olympian Holley Mangold, who currently weighs 320 lbs, played football in high school as a lineman. Dimeglio, on the other hand, weighs only 160 lbs and plays a skilled position. I should mention this talented young lady also plays flag football and starts on her varsity basketball team.
The Olympics did show us what might be seen as male non neutral sports for women such as weightlifting, boxing and wrestling, so who knows how news worthy a story such as this will be in the near future. While I already intended to see Dimeglio’s fellow teammate and Broward County’s 2011 leading rusher Alex Collins, I hope I am able to see her in a game.
If Collins can perform similar to his 1,786 yard, 28 touchdown season and the Paladians improve from their 7-4 record last season as district runner-up, I may get my wish. South Plantation opens their season this week at Nova.
