Here are FloridaHSFootball.com’s Class 5A Rankings after Week 2. Ranking, team name, record and previous rank included for each team.
Below the Top 10 are the regional rankings for Class 5A, showing you how teams are ranked in each of the four designated FHSAA regions.
Class 5A Top 10
1. American Heritage (Plantation), 1-1, 1
Week 2: Lost to DeMatha Catholic, 23-22
This Week: vs. Miami Northwestern
Comment: A very close game with DeMatha Catholic on Saturday night and we can say that American Heritage-Plantation is a better team compared to Miami Central when comparing head-to-head. As such we feel no reason to knock them off the top spot knowing what we know.
2. Hallandale, 2-0, 4
Week 2: Defeated Dillard, 41-14
This Week: Idle
Comment: Hallandale has started of the season with a 2-0 record and has looked like the challenger that wants to topple American Heritage (Plantation) and make a run for state. Will get this week off before opening up district play next week against Stranahan.
3. North Marion, 2-0, 2
Week 2: Defeated Ocala Forest, 35-10
This Week: at Ocala Vanguard
Comment: The Colts doubled their point total from Week 1 and is certainly on the path to another winning season. Vanguard will be a test for the Colts this week.
4. Bishop Moore, 2-0, 3
Week 2: Defeated Lyman, 24-7
This Week: at Orlando The First Academy
Comment: Bishop Moore defeated a Lyman team that had shut out Citrus the week before hand. Not sure if the Hornets just took it easy against Lyman or Lyman is a better team than expected despite the score. Will hit the road for the first time this season on Friday.
5. Wakulla, 1-1, 5
Week 2: Defeated Cathedral Prep, Pa., 31-14
This Week: at Madison County
Comment: The War Eagles bounced back nicely after taking a beating against Spartanburg, SC the week before. Wakulla will head to Boot Hill in Madison this week, but could find themselves facing a weaker than expected Madison County team.
6. Jesuit, 2-0, 10
Week 2: Defeated Trinity Catholic, 38-0
This Week: at Leto
Comment: Made easy work against what has traditionally been a strong Trinity Catholic team last week. Will have an easy task this week against a very weak Leto team. No drop off to be found with the Tigers here.
7. Coconut Creek, 1-1, 7
Week 2: Lost to Flanagan 21-14
This Week: vs. Boyd Anderson
Comment: Played against Flanagan for a full four quarters and never really let the game get away from them. This is a big improvement for the Cougars compared to last year. Will get another test this week against an improving Boyd Anderson program.
8. Suwannee, 1-1, 8
Week 2: Defeated Fort White, 26-7
This Week: Idle
Comment: Bounced back with a win over rival Fort White, but we won’t find out if Suwannee can maintain things until they host Yulee next week in their district opener.
9. Lakewood, 2-0, NR
Week 2: Defeated St. Petersburg, 34-20
This Week: at Bolles
Comment: Has started off the season strong with two wins, but will face the first challenge of the 2015 season with a three and half hour bus trip to Jacksonville to take on Corky Rogers and his undefeated Bolles program.
10. Nature Coast, 2-0, NR
Week 2: Defeated Hudson, 46-21
This Week: vs. Springstead
Comment: Nature Coast has been a team on the rise under second-year head coach Justin Worden. It has been evident that Nature Coast is certainly a better team than last year’s team that was just moments away from the playoffs last season. Will get a test this week against Hernando County rival, Springstead. In the end some might think this ranking is a little early, but we are willing to take the risk here.
