FLAG FOOTBALL: Class 2A regional quarterfinals preview

The FHSAA Flag Football State Series kicks off tomorrow (Wednesday) around the state with regional quarterfinals in all four classifications. Here is a look at Class 2A with our regional quarterfinals preview with five games to watch, statistical leaders in six different categories, SOS rankings, and FPRI Game Forecast:

FIVE GAMES TO WATCH

REGION 1

No. 5 Stanton (Jacksonville) (9-6) at No. 4 Yulee (12-4)

FPRI Forecast: Stanton 5 over Yulee

Stanton has seen its ups and downs this season, but one thing they are coming into this game with is they already have one win over Yulee this season that came late last month, a 13-12 road victory in Yulee. Now with making their second trip to host Hornets, the visiting Blue Devils will be looking to keep Yulee from earning their first-ever playoff victory in program history. Stanton will rely on a few different athletes with Aiyanna Smiley at quarterback and heavily relying on two-way star Catherine Brewer who led the team in scoring with nearly seven points per game and in interceptions with at least one per game. That action will counteract the Hornets’ Brooke Reid who is averaging just over 165 yards passing per game and Brewer’s interception capabilities could keep Reid from doing damage and making this a close ball game again. When look at these two teams and their strength of schedule coming into this game, they are close in range, according to The Florida Power Rankings Index with Stanton ranking 80th overall in with an SOS of 1.686 while Yulee ranks 100th with an SOS of 1.670.

REGION 2

No. 5 Weeki Wachee (10-5) at No. 4 New Smyrna Beach (11-5)

FPRI Forecast: New Smyrna Beach 31 over Weeki Wachee

Why do we even mention this game? Well first and foremost our forecast does not account for injuries happening and second it is relying strictly on numbers and data that is entered. As such, this game has a lot of opportunities to be so much closer than the forecast as the host Barracudas have been navigating the second half of the season without all-around senior athlete Emma Corr who sustained an injury in their game against Spruce Creek back in middle of March, a game that ended in a 6-0 loss. Since that game, New Smyrna Beach has been 3-3 overall and is currently on a three-game losing streak having lost to Seabreeze 7-6 in triple overtime in the district semifinals last week. So without Corr in the game, the Barracudas are trying to find ways to move the ball around and are having to make a concerted team effort to do so and finding whoever can make a play to do so. As such, the big goal for New Smyrna Beach will be to limit the visiting Hornets’ Karly Pasmore who is averaging 169.9 yards per game. If they can succeed in limiting Weeki Wachee, that could be helpful in what likely will be a low-scoring affair. If not, Weeki Wachee could get the necessary points needed to advance on to the regional semifinals. According to The Florida Power Rankings Index, New Smyrna Beach enters the game with tied for the 113th best strength of schedule in the state with an SOS rating of 1.661 while Weeki Wachee is tied 242nd overall on strength of schedule with an SOS rating of 1.589.

No. 6 Citrus (Inverness) (9-7) at No. 3 Nature Coast (Brooksville) (12-4)

FPRI Forecast: Nature Coast 6 over Citrus

Here is another game to not get to all caught up with in looking at the records. A rematch from earlier in the regular season that saw the visiting Hurricanes defeat the Sharks 26-6. For Nature Coast, this rematch is most welcome with a chance at proving that loss was just a mere fluke. Statistically speaking, the Hurricanes will need to find a way to keep Madelyn DePetrillo for the Sharks in check as she has been averaging 157 yards per game including 149 yards passing. That is in comparison to their own quarterback in Kendyl Hunnicutt who is averaging nearly 84 total yards per game. If Citrus wants to come out with a victory again, they will need a huge defensive effort which has eluded them some in games across the season. And when it comes to the strength of schedule, The Florida Power Rankings Index tell us that Nature Coast has an SOS of 1.649 which is 133rd best in the state right now compared to Citrus having an SOS of 1.622 which is tied for 185th.

REGION 3

No. 5 Osceola (Seminole) (9-7) at No. 4 Gulf (New Port Richey) (15-2)

FPRI Forecast: Osceola 7 over Gulf

Don’t turn and brush off Osceola here with their record as they come to face first-year Gulf who also won their very first district championship last week. The visiting Warriors who have been playing flag football for a long time and have quite a few playoff berths under their belt could give the host Buccaneers some trouble. When looking at the statistics, Osceola has relied heavily on Daniella Buttacavoli who is averaging over 172 total yards per game including 131 passing yards per game and is also the team’s leading scorer on average. That is compared to Casidy Poppen for Gulf who is averaging just over 113 yards per game but is averaging below 100 passing yards per game at just below 92 yards per game. That difference could be huge for both teams as Gulf will need to find ways to limit Osceola from moving the ball down field. And if you want one more data point to consider, Osceola has an SOS rating from The Florida Power Ratings Index of 1.656 good for 122nd overall in the state. That is compared to Gulf’s 1.549 SOS ranking which ranks toward the bottom for Class 2A teams and is tied 336th overall in the state.

REGION 4

No. 5 Jensen Beach (11-6) at No. 4 Miami Norland (10-1), 5

FPRI Forecast: Miami Norland 2 over Jensen Beach

The visiting Falcons are looking to attempt another deep playoff run, but the road starts by going through the host Vikings who are coming off of winning a district championship last week. However, if you take a deeper look, one might ask if the Vikings got a higher seed thank the Falcons because of that district championship given the looks on paper? Well first, the stats might be misleading with Miami Norland not having a complete outlook on stats available, but a deeper analysis leads over to The Florida Power Rankings Index where we find Jensen Beach has an strength of schedule ranking of 1.676, best for 93rd overall among all teams in the state while the Vikings have an SOS of 1.642 which is tied for 140th overall. In that sense, it shows that Jensen Beach has played and overall better schedule during the 2025 season. Keep an eye on Paige Bressman who averages just over 190 yards per game passing as this could be a very close outing between both teams.
