FORT LAUDERDALE – In a game that had been hyped up for weeks now, the district 16-5A championship game was over almost right after it had started.
In just a short 2:20 into the game, American Heritage was already leading Cardinal Gibbons 20-0. Thanks to a 46-yard touchdown pass from Torrance Gibson to sophomore wide receiver Drederick Snelson and back to back pick-6’s from Juwan Dowels and Brandon Vicens.
After going down early, Cardinal Gibbons turned to their phenomenal sophomore running back Deon McIntosh. Cardinal Gibbons started to make a comeback until midway into the second quarter and tragedy struck when Peyton Bender was sacked and stayed down. It turned out Bender had a broken collarbone and his season is over as it may require surgery.
The American Heritage Patriots were led by quarterback Torrance Gibson. Gibson threw for two touchdowns and ran for another on a 76-yard run that broke every defender’s ankles cutting and juking up the field.
At the half, the Patriots were leading 44-17. They continued to pour it on thanks to a pair of rushing touchdowns from Georgia commit Sony Michel and Travis Jackson.
The Patriots won with a final score of 71-24.
