  8. My major issue when individuals talk about changing the scheduling and doing away with districts is that the problem is bigger than scheduling. If you are in Trinity Christian's (Jacksonville) district, you are playing for runner-up spot. If you are a small school who is not a D-1 factory, but still believes in football, then you risk your players being hurt, so as a result you might go independent, or might go to 6 or 7 man football. I get it. This is what happens now that 80+ schools have gone independent. Similarly, if you are in St. Thomas Acquinas or Manatee or Lakeland's district, you might feel the same way. As a result, a scheduling system that offers never to have play them in the regular season (despite the fact that you might have to play them in the playoffs) sounds like a great idea. But you even then you aren't competing on a level playing field. Part of why the FHSAA (and all HS Associations) have classifications is to try and level the playing field. Nobody believes that a 1A team (Rural, 600 or less) is going to regularly beat an 8A team. As a result, we divide schools into classifications based on population. This unfortunately fails to realizes that some teams are just good. They have a strong feeder system, their principal and community support football. They have tradition. Whatever the reason, certain schools continually do well in their classification. They outpunch their population numbers. So before we change scheduling, what we need to do is realign based on two things: 1) Population 2) Playoff Success (or lack thereof) First, I started with the 2015 student population of all 437 teams in 2A through 8A that currently are playing in districts. Second, I looked at the last 10 seasons (2006-2015) and looked at their success and failure in terms of reaching the playoffs and then how far did you go in the playoffs. Third, I added 75 students for each round you made it in the playoffs. So a team that lost in the first round, added 75. A team that lost in the 5th round, I added 375. Fourth, I subtract 75 students for year you did not make the playoffs. Fifth, I weighted those years. 2015 received the full weight, while 2014 received 90%, etc until 2006 which only received 10% of the weight. The idea being that success and failure make a difference but success or failure from 10 years ago has only a small impact compared to more recent success. So for example: Gainesville 2015: 1897 student population 2015 season: +225 x 1.00 = 225 2014 season: +225 x 0.90 = 202.5 2013 season: +150 x 0.80 = 120 2012 season: +375 x 0.70 = 262.5 2011 season: +225 x 0.60 = 135 2010 season: +300 x 0.50 = 150 2009 season: +150 x 0.40 = 60 2008 season: -75 x 0.30 = -22.5 2007 season: -75 x 0.20 = -15 2006 season: -75 x 0.10 = -7.5 For a new total population of 3007 Forest Hill (West Palm Beach) 2015: 2316 student population 2015 season: -75 x 1.00 = -75 2014 season: -75 x 0.90 = -67.5 2013 season: -75 x 0.80 = -60 2012 season: -75 x 0.70 = -52.5 2011 season: -75 x 0.60 = -45 2010 season: -75 x 0.50 = -37.5 2009 season: -75 x 0.40 = -30 2008 season: -75 x 0.30 = -22.5 2007 season: -75 x 0.20 = -15 2006 season: -75 x 0.10 = -7.5 For a new total population of 1903 Now for smaller schools, I did an additional weighting. If you were in 2A, I only counted 20% of the change in students, for 3A I counted 40%, and for 4A, I counted 50%. 5A and above I counted the full weight of the change. Rural Schools (1A) remained unchanged. I also did another step, where I skipped the above step and used the full weight of the changes. (I found the results were overall better when I used the full weight of the changes). Finally, I used Google Maps to put the teams into classifications and districts. Weighting of 2A, 3A, 4A. Class 2A Class 3A Class 4A Class 5A Class 6A Class 7A Class 8A No Weighting of 2A, 3A, 4A Class 2A Class 3A Class 4A Class 5A Class 6A Class 7A Class 8A Now to be honest creating districts is harder than you think especially when it comes to the Panhandle and North Central Florida area. I tried to limit the # of 3 team districts, but honestly it is darn near impossible (another reason why mathematically it makes no sense to have 8 classes if the goal is large enough districts). Every time you add a district to one area that moves the district, which moves another district and you end up one district short. Now, I didn't add the independent schools. But I will do their numbers once I get some time. I think many of those independents would enjoy the idea of knowing that some of the "elite" small schools are pushed up a classification or two or more. The final thing that needs to happen after reclassification is a system of promotion and relegation. While my system reclassifies teams based on past success and population, teams that perform well should move. Teams that fail to perform should move down. In my reclassification system, Forest Hill moved from 7A (currently) to 6A (reclassified). If they fail to perform at 6A, move them down again. Additionally, a school like Booker T Washington went from 4A to 6A/7A (depends on the weighting). If they success, then move them again.
  9. Mr. Wilson, How does your system prevent 2nd round re-matches or even 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round rematches? Again, you are suggesting that the old system is broken without realizing that your system doesn't fix the very thing you are railing against.
  10. Mr. Wilson, As some have suggested, shrinking of a classification does many away with many of the "negatives" of the current system. It seems weird that we would invent a Rube Goldberg machine solution when there are simpler answers. Even my own promotion/relegation answer is complicated. Just to give an example, Lincoln has been ranked #1 (in the very first proposal) to the point where they might not even make the playoffs. This a team that won it's first round playoff game against a team (Robert E. Lee) that has been consistently in the playoffs in each proposed scenario. So my question becomes, did Lincoln not prove they were a quality team by winning the playoff regardless of their 4-6 record.
  11. Coachmcg, I empathize with you. Fans of 1A schools freaked out when Fort White, Union County, Baldwin, and Madison which are right at the 600 and slightly over are in 1A. I can't imagine how they would react with a school of 800. ----- Captain, You are right. Reduce a classification gets rid of many of the arguments about unfair districts and losing teams making the playoffs. ----- I keep going back to the same question, if you are stating the current system rewards you for playing a "tough" schedule, that means you think the current system punishes you for playing a tough one. I just don't see evidence of that. ----- But Joshua, you want to avoid blowout match-ups in the first round, but the region you spotlight, didn't have those until the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Actually the first round match-ups were relatively close, 3 points, 3 points, 7 points, and 15 points. Heck, in 7A, only 5 of the 1st 16 games were won by more than 16 points (2 scores). I agree there is a problem in scheduling, but the problem is created because we only assume that school size is the only way to level the playing field.
  12. Again, as for your current changes, I like the one with the first one, but that takes into account previous success (which is basically what am I saying in regards to promotion/relegation). As for your example of ACD, what if you thought they were going to be good? How many people truly thought First Coast would go 2-7 for the year? Or that Ed White goes 3-7, both tier 4 after both being regional finalists the year before? You basically punish a team because their opponent sucks that year, I just can't find fairness in that. _______________________________________________________________ Honestly, while all games should count, maybe we should like the Olympics and your highest and lowest games get thrown out. Complete speculation without looking at the numbers.
  13. Nevermind... you finally saw it. Since I can't post fancy pictures. Please understand under the count every game (which you called me out on when I said Lincoln would end up being the #1 seed and suggested I only use the 8 games). Creekside becomes tied for #9 and one point of 8th. Again, I am not saying that Creekside gets in under the current proposal. My problem is that we throw out proposals without seeing the effects of those proposals.
  14. The link is your original post and I will gladly send you the Region 1, Class 7A points that show Creekside makes the playoffs under the original proposed system that is outlined in the link. I know the system has changed since then, but sorry if I am apprehensive about any proposal that didn't do the legwork to find out what teams would enter the playoffs to argue that it is a better system. http://floridahsfootball.com/forums/index.php?/topic/993-football-playoff-changes-on-the-discussion-docket-for-football-advisory-committee/?hl=creekside Again, your assumption is that a team is purposefully scheduling cupcakes. I point out numerous examples of teams that fail to live up to expectations or teams that suffer a major injury and the team is never the same. How is that ok? Why should the kids be punished for who is willing to play them? I will keep asking how does the current system punish you for playing for a hard schedule. Or Team A schedule 9 3-7 or worse cupcakes and you. They go 9-0, but lose to you. You earn the 50 points because you beat a 9-1, because your system recognizes them as quality opponent, but also understands they aren't by not letting them into the playoffs. Somehow that seems contradictory to me.
  15. Mr. Wilson, I have emailed with Mr. Beasley as well and I do understand where this is coming from. I would also point that the first go around for the proposed system, I basically proved why the system wouldn't work as 0-10 Creekside would have made the playoffs. While this system is obviously better than the first proposed system, pardon me if I willing to question things when some simple math proved how bad the system would be. But some issues still remain as they try and sell this: They are selling this as it "rewards playing a tough schedule" Two questions come to mind, 1) How does the current system punish you for playing a tough schedule? and 2) How do you define a tough schedule? My example would be Apopka from 2014. They entered 8A playoffs as a 6-4 district runner-up. They win the state championship. Now all of their losses were against 7-3 teams or better, so they weren't losing to scrubs. At the same time, I doubt they could be in the playoffs with a 6-4 record in 8A under the new system. Second, how does one define a tough schedule. Teams rise and fall all the time. In the Jacksonville area, both First Coast and Ed White were a lot worse than people would expected this year and as a result would have been a drain on your schedule. How is that fair the the kids? They don't control who is willing to play them or how good their opponents are. I look at Santa Fe a couple of years ago. They were on a tear beating teams then their QB becomes out for the season and the team looks average. I look at a school like Hamilton County who plays in the 1A state championship game in 2014 and then goes 4-6 in 2015. Third, County ADs are going to use this as a way to take control of schedules. Look at Duval County again. Until recently, no schools played outside of the Gateway Conference for out of district games. If you think County ADs in big metro areas are going to allow tons of cross-state games because of this, then you have never talked to one of these ADs. They care about saving money. So don't expect a school like Raines to be playing Mainland for example. (Yes, I know Raines and First Coast played out of county the past two years, but only because Superintendent worked in Miami-Dade.) Look to St Johns County, Creekside went 0-10 last year, who wants that team on their schedule? At no point will Bartram, Nease, Ponte Vedra, or St. Augustine drop them though, it is a gate game and cheap travel game. Does that game hurt playoffs chances even with a win? Yup. So yes, of course, County ADs love this. They see cost savings. Of course, coaches love this. They don't have to schedule powerhouse schools so they can pump up that win %. Are fans going to love this? Nope, way too confusing to figure out. The fact that a team can go from being #1 seed to being a #4 because an opponent from week 1 loses a game is to me something fans will not enjoy. Do I understand the need for a system that does avoids 50-0 blowouts? Sure do. I understand it in terms of money (nobody shows up to that game). I understand it terms of competition (Winning and Losing Coaches hate those games). I understand it terms of player safety (2nd teamers lighting up overly tired 1st teamers). I just think that promotion/relegation is easier to do without changing the simple system of winners/runner-ups.
  16. Of course, there are other things that could be done. Every 8 years of a lack of playoff, you move down one classification automatically. You win a state championship you move up. And yes, 8A would be a bloodbath, but at the same time that is what the FHSAA is trying to do. They want exciting regular games. Exciting games come from tradition/rivalry and competitive play. The current system doesn't have competitive play due to the fact that we are basing "competition" solely on how big your school is, not on how well they play throughout the years. Would a school like University Christian or even Trinity Christian or Booker T Washington ever make it up to 8A, doubtful. But UC as a 3A/4A, TC as a 5A, BTW as a 6A or 7A school would all be fair.
  17. Broward, Thank you for your suggestion. I did 5% of the population (if you don't make the playoffs) and it ends up being a little screwy. 2A is a mess and would lead to more mass defections than currently. The 4 lowest teams overall are Stanton, Port St. Lucie, 8A Colonial, Interlachen and 2 more in the lowest 8 are Satellite and Paxon. Those were all in 2A. Colonial dropping 6 classes make me question it. Some of the other teams in 2A would be PK Yonge, St John Paul II (Boca), Interlachen, Lake Placid, Satellite, Paxon, Stanton, Port St. Lucie, and Forest Hill along with some of the other smaller/less successful 2A teams. As for Ferguson, they only dropped to the 21 largest population, so they are still 8A.
  18. Actually, you used the term more successful (not better) in your first post which have two different meanings. Gainesville over the past 5 years has been more successful (see playoff records). You might have been the better team (see head to head records), but vocabulary matters. My point is that success (and the system that I have created) reward success in playoffs. In case you were curious, if CHS even had one more round, they would have been nearly 8A just like GHS.
  19. Actually... In 2014, CHS lost in the first round. Gainesville lost in the regional finals. 1 round vs 3 rounds. In 2015, CHS lost in the fourth round. Gainesville lost in the regional finals. 4 rounds vs 3 rounds. So in the past 2 years, GHS has made it to further on average or total rounds, but I get it. You want to lift your program by bringing down others. But if you want to be more fair, since 2011 (when Coach Allen arrived), CHS has gone 7-5 in the playoffs. GHS has gone 11-5. Yes, CHS has beaten GHS 4 out of 5 times on the field, but we were talking about playoff success.
  20. I will use Forest Hill as my example since they are a 7A school, they haven't been in the playoffs for 19 years and as a result lost 950 students. They started as the 99th largest school, but after all the changes, they are now the 282nd largest school (with population changes for everyone). This is because they moved down more than other schools and many teams passed them in terms of population increases. As for Ferguson, they went from being the 2nd highest to being the 4th highest. And even if they lost as many as Forest Hill would still be the 14th highest. Part of my idea is to recognize that school size is not the only factor that allows teams to be competitive. All of us would expect a horrible 8A team to be able to beat an average 2A if only due to size, but many of us would also recognize that an average 4A team could compete with and beat a bad 8A. So basically my formula would recognize that size isn't everything, but it does play an important role in terms of competitiveness. As for the 1000 person school (which is 4A), the change in population was only 50%. So for example, Booker T Washington which went to State Finals in 2014/2015 would have gained 600 population if they had been in 5A, but since they are in 4A (I only affected their population by 50% or 300). That is why they only moved up one classification instead of two if they had the full force of the population. It also isn't going to affect every school equally, for example. Columbia High School went from being one of the smallest schools in 7A to being a middle of the pack school in terms of weighted population, but Gainesville a school with 3 less students than Columbia rises from high 6A to almost 8A on the strength of their success the last two years. Of course, there is more that could happen. I could weight playoff runs over the past 10 years with last year's runs being worth 100%, 2014 being 90%, 2013 being 80%, and so on so teams who have long term success could move up higher. Additionally, I could make it for every 4 years that you miss the playoffs formula increases in numbers. So to answer you specific query, would Ferguson ever fall to 7A, probably not. The formula could be tweaked of course, but with Ferguson so large they would need to lose nearly 2000 from their original population to make it to 7A.
  21. It is a brainstorming... took 3 hours, but with the formula I set up (plus some tweaks where it would apply 0% to 1A, 20% to 2A, 40% to 3A, and 50% to 4A). It came out ok. Some schools I couldn't figure out when they started football (Paxton (Jacksonville) and Stanton (Jacksonville)) in their modern forms. Additionally, if a school made the playoffs in 2014, but not 2015, they didn't get the luxury of losing population 50 person from their population. If a school hasn't made the playoffs ever, I used their starting state with the FHSAA (charter/private) or founding date (public schools). I know that you aren't eligible for playoffs your first two years, but it was easier. 8A would gain Venice, STA, Plant, Lakeland, Oakleaf, Buchholz, Armwood, Miami Central, Mainland, Niceville. Niceville would have to be sent down to 7A though due to travel (Martin County or Gainesville would take their place). 7A would gain Jesuit, American-Heritage (Plantation), Bishop Moore 6A would have a lot of middle of the road type teams. 5A would gain 8A Homestead (the team that fell the furthest in 8A, but they should have been a 6A to begin with so it evens out), 7A Forest Hill falls all the way to 5A. 4A would gain 6A Englewood (Jacksonville) and Blake (Tampa), they would also gain 3A American Heritage (Delray) who almost climbs to 5A. 3A would gain 5A Paxon, Satellite, and Port St. Lucie 2A would gain 4A PK Yonge, Interlachen, and 5A Stanton who I put their modern form starting in 1981 and they haven't been in the playoffs. I added 75 students for each round of the playoffs you made it in 2014 and 2015. So a state champion and a state runner-up both would receive 375 students. I subtracted 50 students for every consecutive year out of the playoffs since 2015, but not counting 2014. Just over half would not change their classifications.
  22. These are the list of the positives about the new schedule from the powerpoint... Schools control their own schedule (Agreed) Schools can do what best fits their athletes (Agreed) No more complaining about district placement (Ummm... you still will hear complaints about every other sport, and this sounds like a situation where you guys are just forced to work harder) School districts or areas can create their own conferences (They can do that know with out of district games) Schools and/or Districts can control Travel (This is just a repeat of Point #1) Creates excitement that is now missing (This is an opinion) Counts week 11 (It counts now, it just doens't count for playoff purposes, and for the most part neither does week 1 or 2 for most schools. While it is a true argument, it is a stupid argument). The best teams will get in (No they won't because people will figure out how to game the system like they always do. BTW Region 1, Class 7A 7 out the 8 teams in the new simulation were already playoff teams, so it's not like good teams were held out). Week 11 press conference announcing matchups (Really?!?!?! Somebody will open a newspaper or go to a website to see it. What will actually happen is that most teams will move their bye to Week 11 so they know the end results). The seeding will create a more exciting playoff system (Opinion, but seeding would be better overall, but not much. Look to Region 4, Class 7A. Dwyer played STA in Round 2. If they had been seeded #1 and #2, it would be Round 3. Not much of a difference.) Creates more self-policing (Not even sure what this means, but if it is regards to scheduling you already said that) Tough schedules will be rewarded (How are they punished now? If you set-up a Murder's Row of Plant, Armwood, Apopka, Bolles, Trinity Christian, STA, and IMG as your schedule, are you punished?)
  23. But when does a schedule become a cupcake schedule... For example, Buchholz (Gainesville) went 4-6 in 2014 in 2015 they went 10-2 and the schedules were very similar in terms of teams. Does this mean that Buchholz scheduled cupcakes or did they get better? If you scheduled them before the season, did you think they were a 9-1 type regular season team? If you schedule First Coast (Jacksonville) did you really think they were going to be that bad? I find it funny that they used Region 1, Class 7A which I used to prove their last system was idiotic. They still have the wrong math for Columbia High School (which probably means they have the wrong math for other schools as well). As I look at the power point, I don't see how this solves the problem... Some are in small districts some are in large districts (This is FHSAA fault, they chose to expand to 8 classifications, shrink the classifications, problem is solved). The best teams don’t always get in (This is always true, there is always a team that feels they deserved to get in and didn't). Travel/Competition/Safety (These issues could be solved by new districting) Old and Outdated (This is an opinion and nothing about it seems outdated unless you are just looking to switch) Does not take in account week 11 outcome (Actually lots of weeks don't count under the current system, not just week 11). Very little excitement leading into playoffs (Another Opinion. Ask Lincoln if they were excited after the Shootout they won, and who says week 11 will have any more excitement. Win or Lose your team could be in, additionally, having to sit and pray that your former opponents win so you can get extra points doesn't seem like a situation where the winner is being determined on the field). Second round rematches (ummm... you could have 1st/2nd/3rd round rematches under this "new" system. Rematches Happen.) Over 50% of the playoff games in 2015 had a 21 point differential. (That speaks to numerous issues including too many classifications, a renewed emphasis on offense. I also take issue that this system fixes this. 6 out 8 teams in the sample classification made the playoffs under the old system. Only 2 of the games in Region 1 were over 21 points, both of them were CHS vs Lincoln, CHS vs Bartram Trail (both games that could have happened under the new system anyway. So if you are complaining about big victories. This doesn't solve it.) 40% of teams are in a 3 or 4 team district (FHSAA's fault for 8 classifications, including 4 really small classifications. Second, faulty data. 7 out of 40 teams in 1A play in 3 or 4 team districts, but there aren't more teams that they could add. 24/31 in 2A, but again most of the schools that could be used in 2A are independents. 29/29 in 3A, 8 out 40 in 4A, 13 out 82 in 5A, 24/79 in 6A, 17/86 in 7A, 8/89 in 8A. Unless I miscounted that comes to 130/476 or 27% not 40%. Boo for bad math) Independent number is growing due to forced district play (Agreed that this is a problem, but this doesn't really solve the problem. These same teams can have the same schedules they have now as Independents or as Class 2A. The only difference is that they have to play Class 2A powerhouses in the playoffs, which they want to avoid to begin with).
  24. I have already talked against this policy and still think it is idiotic and overly complicated. The current system works. You win your district you move on. There is more incentive now to play a "winning" team to toughen up your schedule. Why would say Columbia play Bolles or Trinity Christian under the new system? If they lose they gain nothing, if they win, they gain little. So why bother? If you want to fix the system, allow for relegation and promotion. If you qualify for playoffs 100 students added to your population, 75 for additional every round. (only 10% of that for 1A-3A). Most 400 from one season and 800 if you go back to back. Negative 50 for every season you don't qualify for the playoffs (so if you haven't made in 19 seasons (looking at your Forest Hills (West Palm Beach)). We start with 2316 subtract 1(9 *50) and end up with 1366 where they play Suncoast, Fort Pierce Westwood, and Port St. Lucie instead of Dwyer (Palm Beach Gardens), Olympic Heights (Boca Raton), Palm Beach Lakes (West Palm Beach), Royal Palm Beach, West Boca Raton. No more than a 1000 students can be subtracted.
  25. The following are a list of out of area games that Lakeland played two home games with back to back seasons. My assumption is that these schools are paid to go to Lakeland for the games, otherwise why give up the gate? 2005 Lakeland Home Games Miami Norland Miami Dr. Krop 2006 Lakeland Home Games Miami Norland Miami Dr. Krop 2007 Lakeland Home Games South Dade (Homestead) Boyd Anderson (Lauderdale Lakes) Killian (Miami) 2008 Lakeland Home Games South Dade (Homestead) Boyd Anderson (Lauderdale Lakes) Killian (Miami) 2009 Lakeland Home Games Plantation Flanagan (Pembroke Pines) 2010 Lakeland Home Games Plantation Flanagan (Pembroke Pines) 2011 Lakeland Home Games Flanagan (Pembroke Pines) Hialeah 2012 Lakeland Home Games Flanagan (Pembroke Pines) Hialeah 2013 Lakeland Home Games Treasure Coast North Miami Beach Fort Lauderdale 2014 Lakeland Home Games Treasure Coast North Miami Beach Fort Lauderdale 2015 Lakeland Home Games Ed White (Jacksonville) Carol City (Miami) Fort Lauderdale Blance Ely (Pompano Beach) 2016 Lakeland Home Games Ed White (Jacksonville) Carol City (Miami) Fort Lauderdale Blance Ely (Pompano Beach)
