    Joshua,

To actually answer the question, It helps, but it still is not the complete answer. Several years ago (approaching 10), Apopka played in Mississippi,  I remember them having a really small team maybe 35. They still were regional finalists.

How many seniors? How many juniors? How many years has each kid been in the program? Are better questions than just total numbers.

    ----
Why was 600 chosen for 1A? (Originally 500). Would 1A object to schools like the following from playing in 1A?
Trenton (345) Playing up due to punishment from recruiting
    Taylor (Pierson) (616)
    Fort White (632)
    Taylor County (653)
    Baldwin (658)
    Newberry (670)
    Walton (725)
    Interlachen (744)
    Marianna (754)
    Keystone Heights (798)
    Bradford (849)
    The Villages (915)
    Fernandina Beach (949)
    Gadsden County (978)
    West Nassau (1051)
    Mount Dora (1082)
    ----------------------
Why is 290 student currently the top for 2A? Can this be expanded to 500? Is the disparity that huge? How many teams joined 2A/3A because of the new playoff system? Wasn't that supposed to fix the numbers in 2A and 3A?

I know Fort White, Baldwin, and Newberry were 1A last year.  People are looking at the 600 number and defining 1A to 600. Of the 34 teams in 1A there is 1 team over 600, 7 teams 500-600,  9 teams 400-500(1 team 496),  10 teams 300-400, 4 teams 200-300 and 3 teams below 200. That avg is 403. 11 teams that made the playoffs are above the avg. with the 1 above 600 and 5 above 500 and 1 at 496.

So you asking if 1A would object to adding them schools. I would say yes. with 26 of the current teams being under 500.

so where is your cutoff?  800? 600?  or do we put them back with private schools who also have under 600.  If it is all about # of students then playing Trinity Christian with 428 students shouldn't be a concern.  I would rather play Cypress Creek with 3500 lol.  I don't think rural should be with private but I think that 650 number should be bumped up a bit to 800 to expand the number of teams.

It is a concern if of the 428, 50 kids are hand picked into the school just to play football. But thats not the case for public schools.. I know you are trying to make a point but public and private are 2 different things.  There is no way a public 3500 student school should not be able to put a quality product on the field when a 200 student school can.

I see it the other way. The 650 number should be bumped down. And the historically 1A school would be left in 1A...

Not sure what you mean.  I'm definitely not a have.  I'm just looking for more competitive games and not so many classes.  Fewer classes mean less opportunities which means if I was a have I would have less of a chance.  I went to a school with a student population of under 300.  The current 1A is up to around 650 students.  I know Frostproof has around that many.  I expanded the list to include up to 800 to make it larger.  Cypress Creek in orlando has 3500 kids and they couldn't compete with Madison County or any of the top schools in 1A.  Population matters some but for the most part it has very little to do with the product on the field.

You don't have to agree and can like the current system.  I'm ok with that.  I for one think it is way too watered down in all sports not just football.

For me any school with the same amount of students should be competitive. Instead of switching from this system to that system. Hold the schools accountable and get proper coaching to the school. There is no way a school with 3500 students not be able to put a quality product on the field. Put the right coach in there and the kids will come out and be competitive.

I dont like the current system. But I dont like the idea of my school with 200 or so kids be in a class with 1000+ kids.

Just asking here Magic.  and you think what Wildwood did was good.....that that is what needs to go to playoffs?  How is that measure best team?

I do not think it is good. That's why I stated it. The system is suppose to reward the teams that play tough schedules. Wildwood showed that the system did not work that way by getting in as a #2 seed. But unless there are changes, other teams will go this route also. A 38 avg gets you in the playoffs. That's 10 cat 4 playoff teams. If I'm scheduling games, I'm looking at all the playoff teams with large number of seniors that may have a fall off next year.

If Pahokee went 5-4 lost to Vero 8A state contender, Cocoa 4A state contender, Seminole Ridge 8A playoffs and Glades Central 4A playoffs do you think they should be out?  Now we are going to get really good small schools not want to play the really good large schools.  If Madison County lost to Wakulla, Columbia, Dunnelon and Rickards do you think they should be out?

Theres no do you think.. You either in or out by the points. Now our opinion, there probably should never be a situation where a 1A team be out of the playoff with schedules like Madison or Pahokee.

Wildwood shows you do not have to play a tough schedule to be in. They got zero bonus points. And played only 2 teams .500 or over.

Look selection committee isn't gonna solve the politic and discussion.  Neither is this system the way it is now.  BUT you can solve it and you could do it IMMEDIATELY without causing issue.

    1) USE THE SAME POINT SYSTEM IF YOU WANT (i dont think its the best indicator but it will only affect seeding)

    2) 9 GAME SEASON, WEEK 9 OPEN TO SORT PLAYOFFS(COULD GO 10 THIS IS SO EASY).

    3) TOP 16 TEAMS ARE IN, SEED THEM, PLAY

I bet this would receive overwhelming support. if not unanimous, at least for future.

I WOULD LIKE TO SEE IT DONE TODAY BEFORE I HAVE TO SIT AND WATCH A PLAYOFF SEASON THAT WILL EXCLUDE TOP TEAMS.......

TAKE IT OUT OF THE ADULTS HANDS AND PUT IN THE PLAYERS HANDS TO PLAY IT OUT!

In 1A-4A you wouldnt make the season longer or shorter by combining Regions 1&2 and Regions 3&4 and making 2 Regions an North and South. Allow 32 teams just like the bigger schools, seed with points and play it on the field. 1A has 34 teams (94% in playoff), 2A 43 teams(74% in), 3A 39 teams(82% in), 4A 48 teams(67% in). Top 32 teams from these classes make it in period. If you are in 4A and not top 67% of the class there shouldnt be a complaint.

If playoff started this week this would be 1A seeding.  2 teams are left out. Bronson and Sneads

    North

    1.       Baker 2.       Blountstown 3.       Chipley 4.       Holmes County 5.       Cottondale 6.       Jefferson County  7.       Port St Joe 8.       Vernon 9.       Jay 10.   Bozeman 11.   Franklin County 12.   Freeport 13.   Graceville 14.   WeWahitchka 15.   NorthView 16.  Liberty County

    South

    1.       Madison 2.       Dixie 3.       Mayo 4.       Pahokee 5.       Wildwood 6.       Frostproof 7.       Crecsent City 8.       Williston 9.       Hawthorne 10.   Union County 11.   Fort Meade  12.   Chiefland 13.   Bell 14.   Branford 15.   Hilliard 16.   Hamilton County

No bonus points for playing previous playoff teams in your class. Bonus points for playing 2 classes up. It just doesn't make sense to me. Example: South Sumter was a playoff team last year. Dunnellon playing them this year gets bonus points. Why???

  8. 24 minutes ago, ColumbiaHighFan2017class said:

Well it was gonna be the way it is in 1-4a in every class but 5-8a fought it so they kept districts, from what I've heard 1-4a voted majority to have no districts,  had they fought it like 5-8a did they would have gotten to do same thing 5-8a got

Not sure but dont think 1A ever had more than 16 playoff teams since they broke up the class and made 1A and 1B a while back.

  9. 2 hours ago, badbird said:

if you are a 1A team why should playing teams in a different class determine if you are in the 1A playoffs?

That would be like Valdosta State playing Georgia, Alabama, Notre Dame, Clemson and Ohio State and using those games to determine if they get into the D2 playoffs.

Its only 34 teams in 1A... 5A-8A have 32 team playoff... Let all 1A in and have a playoff that determines everything on the field. Make 2 regions. 1A north and 1A south, which would help some with travel. Use points for seeds. Play it out on the field. Doesnt make season longer or shorter. Same number of rounds as bigger classifications. Makes all 1A happy.. Think 2A, 3A and 4A have only around 40 teams... They can do it also.

  10. Some are liking the system and other are hating the system as we get closer to the end. I for one, am disliking it more and more. Just to many factors that teams do not control. (Using your imagination) If this was college football. Is the FSU that Alabama played still the FSU that played Boston College??? But with points today FSU is a CAT 4 and Fresno ST and Colorado St are CAT 2. Why is Alabama punished for FSU losing QB and falling apart? Could Alabama predict a preseason National Champion contender becoming a CAT 4 team???

Teams have to schedule lucky. Its not about playing good teams, its about playing teams that are going to schedule a winnable schedule.  How could we all predict Irma? A 7-2 team is a CAT 2 and a 8-2 team is a CAT 1. A 6-4 is CAT 2 and 5-4 is CAT 3. A 4-6 CAT 3 and 3-6 CAT 4. That's a possible 5 point loss to every team on their schedule since the games were cancelled and teams only played 9 games. Look at some of the 7-2 CAT 2 teams and their game that got cancelled. Many would have been favorite to win those games making them 8-2 and CAT 1 for every team on their schedule.

So basically everyone plays non conference games and points would be used to seed teams then have multi week tournament?

Exactly. Now for the classes with no district. Maybe give teams a way to opt out of regional tourney. Like Bronson is last this week in region 4 in 1A. They probably wouldn't want to head down to Pahokee this year. So just give Pahokee the bye and keep it moving.

they do it in football it just takes weeks to decide who the champion is.  Here is an idea.  It won't work just an idea.  Put everyone in a 6 team district.  5 of your first 8 games are district games to determine seeding the others are up to you.  Week 9 #3 plays #6, #4 plays #5.  week 10 #1 plays winner of #4/5 and #2 plays winner of #3/6.  Week 11 district championship

Do the same without playing any district games during first part of season. If anything use points for seeding. Then last 4 or so weeks start the district tourney. Week 11 Championship then continue on just like the other sports. District runner up travels to a district champ. Maybe with the classes without districts have a full regional tournament.
