Numbers Breakdown: 2017 FHSAA Football State Championships

With all the games set for the 2017 FHSAA Football State Championships this week, we take a fun look at some numbers involving the 16 remaining teams that will be playing this coming weekend at Camping World Stadium in Orlando:

4 — Number of teams from the 904 area code, the most of any one area code in the Sunshine State.

6 — The number of new teams returning to the state championships that appeared in them last year.

3 — The number of state champions from 2016 that are defending their reign. Plantation American Heritage (Class 5A), Cocoa (Class 4A), and University Christian (Class 2A) are the teams defending their state championships.

5 — The guaranteed number of new state champions crowned over the three days in Orlando with Class 8A, Class 7A, Class 6A, Class 3A, and Class 1A all seeking new state champions.

10 — The number of new teams appearing in the 2017 state championships that did not appear last year.

1 — The number of state championship rematches from 2016. That will be the Class 2A state championship between Champagnat and University Christian.

39 — The number of years the last time (1978) Atlantic (Delray Beach) appeared in a state championship game.

29 — The number of years the last time (1988) a Miami-Dade or Broward County team did not appear in a state championship game in either of the two highest classifications.

17 — The number of years the last time (2000) that Venice appeared in a state championship game, in which they also won the state championship.

5 — The number of years the last time (2012) that Madison County appeared in a state championship game.

9 — The number of years the last time (2008) that Miami Northwestern appeared in a state championship game.

4 — The number of years the last time (2013) that Blountstown appeared in a state championship game.

3 — The number of teams making their first appearance in a state championship game. That includes Bartram Trail (Class 7A), Baker County (Class 5A), and Oxbridge Academy (Class 3A).

1 — The number of state championship games featuring two teams that have never won a football state championship, which is the Class 8A state championship.

17 — The number of years that Bartram Trail has been open as a high school and has only missed the playoffs three times (2000 – school was likely an independent that season, 2008, 2014) during that time.

4 — The number of state championship games featuring at least one team (Class 8A, Class 7A, Class 5A, Class 3A) that has never won a football state championship in school history.

40 — The number of years that have passed since the last time (1977) Blountstown won a state championship.

10 — The number of years that have passed since the last time (2007) that both Madison County and Miami Northwestern have won state championships.

12 — The number of years that have passed since the last time (2005) that Chaminade-Madonna won a state championship.

20 — The number of years that have passed since the last time (1997) that Raines won a state championship.

9 — University Christian
4 — Cocoa, Miami Northwestern
3 — American Heritage (Plantation), Blountstown
2 — Armwood, Chaminade-Madonna, Madison County
1 — Champagnat, Raines, Venice
