DEERFIELD BEACH AT NO. 9 CHAMINADE-MADONNA (HOLLYWOOD)
When: Friday, August 24, 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Lion’s Den, Hollywood
Deerfield Beach Outlook: The Bucks are looking to come into the 2018 season looking to make a statement after getting bounced out of the first round of the playoffs in 2017 by upstart Western. Head Coach Jevon Glenn will be looking to make a statement in this game against the defending Class 3A State Champion in Chaminade-Madonna. However, it is going to take a lot of work and that will start with key players including junior QB Derohn King and junior RB Jaylan Knighton who both contributed to a 40-0 shutout win over Stranahan in last week’s kickoff classic, according to the according to Miami Herald. Knighton rushed for 88 yards on 11 carries and one touchdown. The Bucks will have to play a clean game to come away with a victory on Friday night.
Chaminade-Madonna Outlook: Damon Jones has put the Lions back on the map the last couple of years since taking over prior to the 2016 season, restoring the pride and legacy of one of the top small school programs in the state. Jones will now oversee another historical aspect of the program as the team will host its first night game ever to be played on campus at The Lion’s Den on Friday night. With the goal set in mind to defend their Class 3A State Championship, the Lions will have to do it without some key players from the last couple of seasons including Shaun Shivers. However, that does mean much given a new crop of talent is already in place and has hit the ground running. In last week’s three-team preseason jamboree between Columbus, Hallandale, and Chaminade-Madonna, the Lions got a two-quarter 10-7 victory over the Class 8A Columbus program, according to the Miami Herald. They did fall 17-0 to Hallandale but had pulled most of the starters by that point. Key players to watch include LB Keontra Smith, a University of Miami (FL) commit, who collected seven tackles (three for loss) in the game as well as DE Thomas Armstrong and CB Deidrick Stanley.
