ALL-STATE FOOTBALL: 2024 Class 7A All-State Football Award Winners

It is time to honor the best of the best among our All-State Honorees with our All-State Awards Selections. With the selections, we have five award winners Overall Player of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Specialist of the Year, and Coach of the Year.

While it is hard to pick just one selection, all the athletes and coaches considered for each selection are very deserving of the honors.

Without further ado, here are the winners for the 2024 FloridaHSFootball.com All-State Team Awards for Class 7A, and congratulations to all our award winners!

CLASS 7A OVERALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR

RB Jamarice “Gata” Wilder, Venice, Sr.

Look at the stats and why Gata Wilder is our Class 7A Overall Player of the Year. Wilder, one of just several key weapons to the offensive firepower the Indians had all season, led the Indians with 1,919 yards rushing on 192 carries and 28 touchdowns, totaling his senior year with 2,232 All-Purpose yards, including 302 kick return yards and a kick return touchdown. Wilder’s dynamic presence on the field was just one reason Venice won the first state championship since 2021.

CLASS 7A OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

WR Winston Watkins Jr., Venice, Sr.

Winston Watkins is another key piece to the Venice Indians offense, hauling 1,151 yards receiving on 94 receptions and scoring 17 touchdowns. Overall, Watkins has 1,813 all-purpose yards with 412 kick return yards and 130 punt return yards in total, plus adding one punt return for a touchdown. Watkins also contributed to defense, racking up 24 tackles, two interceptions, three pass deflections, forcing a fumble, and recovering a fumble. His contributions to the team led the Indians to the 2024 Class 7A state championship.

CLASS 7A DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

DL Asharri Charles, Venice, Jr.

While Charles did not lead the Indians in total tackles, he was a very dynamic presence on the defensive line, with 107 total tackles and 15.5 tackles for loss. He led the team in sacks with 13.5 more than triple the next athlete on the team with the number of sacks. Also, in his stats for 2024, Charles accounted for 20 quarterback hurries, six pass deflections, and forced two fumbles. His presence helped guide the Indians to the 2024 Class 7A State Championship.

CLASS 7A SPECIALIST OF THE YEAR

K Brunno Reus, Venice, Sr.

One of the strongest legs of any kicker in the Sunshine State, Reus did it all for the Indians going 91-of-93 on PATs while going 9-of-14 on field goals with a long of 53 yards. Reus also accounted for a 56.8-yard average on kickoffs on 124 kickoffs, with 103 of those kickoffs landing in the end zone as touchbacks. Reus also served as a punter and averaged 39.9 yards per punt, landing five punts inside the 20 out of the 14 punts he did make.

CLASS 7A CO-COACHES OF THE YEAR

John Peacock, Venice & Scott Perry, Lake Mary

It is hard to give just one award because of what happened here this year in Class 7A. First, let’s talk about John Peacock and what his Venice squad did in 2024. Yes, it wasn’t beautiful at the start when barnburners were a thing for the Indians in the first half of the season, but as soon as the second half of the season came around, so did the Indians and Peacock’s guidance along with coaching staff made the adjustments needed that won the Indians the school’s fourth overall state championship and their first since 2021, putting to bed the heartbreaks of 2022 and 2023. Then let’s look at what Scott Perry did, finally getting Lake Mary over the proverbial hump of being in the talk about playing for a state championship for years and the Rams finally doing it. While the loss to Venice in the state title game doesn’t ease the pain for the Rams, the season and the path to getting there was not one that didn’t come with its own set of challenges, especially after suffering a setback to Dr. Phillips in the regular season and then getting past Dr. Phillips in a rematch in the state semifinals that set up the tilt for the Class 7A State Championship. As such, Perry, a Lake Mary alum, deserves just as much recognition for what his team accomplished in 2024. As such, John Peacock and Scott Perry are your Class 7A Co-Coaches of the Year.
