TOP 25 ANALYSIS – AFTER WEEK 2
THE BIG PICTURE
The South Florida region is the most expansive in the state, and heading into Week 3 it is also the most unsettled at the top. Wellington sits first with a rating of 77.71 on just one game played โ a 41-0 win over Pahokee โ and has yet to be stress-tested against upper-tier competition. Miami Edison is right behind at 76.76 with three wins and a schedule strength figure of 48.25 that ranks 42nd statewide, the strongest mark in the top 10. Seminole Ridge is the region’s most battle-tested program at 6-1 with seven games played, including a loss to the very Park Vista team that now sits 10th in these rankings. Below the top five, Miami Palmetto has the region’s second-strongest schedule strength figure at 50.81 โ ranking 8th statewide โ and their Week 2 head-to-head win over Miami Edison is the most credible result separating any two top-10 programs so far this season. Week 3 delivers a wave of head-to-head matchups across the region that will resolve several of the most pressing questions about the standings.
No. 1 Wellington โ Wolverines Carry the Region’s Top Rating Into Their First Real Test
Wellington’s rating of 77.71 leads the South Florida region and ranks third in the state, but it rests entirely on one result: a 41-0 shutout of Pahokee on Feb. 24. Their schedule strength figure of 22.12 ranks 223rd statewide โ a middle-tier mark that reflects the early-season reality of a program that has played exactly one game. The Wolverines have not been tested yet, and everything about their current standing is a projection based on preseason ratings blending with that single performance. That changes this week. Wednesday brings Dr. Joaquin Garcia โ a program sitting 12th in these rankings at 2-1 with a schedule strength figure of 35.46 ranking 88th statewide โ before Thursday’s road trip to Dwyer puts Wellington in front of another opponent in a different district context. Two wins, particularly a strong showing against Dr. Joaquin Garcia, begins to validate the rating. Anything less raises legitimate questions about whether the No. 1 standing is earned.
No. 2 Miami Edison โ Red Raiders’ Schedule Credibility Sets Them Apart at the Top
Miami Edison’s case for the top spot in this region is straightforward: they have played the hardest schedule of any team in the top 10, their schedule strength figure of 48.25 ranks 42nd statewide, and they have not lost. The Red Raiders beat Hialeah Gardens 19-0 in Week 1, then added wins over Goleman 20-6 and Miami Palmetto 12-0 in Week 2. That Miami Palmetto result is the most significant win any program in the top 10 has recorded โ the Panthers sit sixth in these rankings with the region’s second-strongest schedule, and Edison held them scoreless. Three games this week will either cement their standing or crack it. Tuesday brings Coral Gables โ currently 23rd in the region at 2-0 โ before Wednesday’s matchup with Everglades tests them against a 4-1 program that lost a one-point game to Boyd Anderson in Week 1. Friday brings Miami Central. Three games against credible opponents is a genuine gauntlet, and how Edison comes through it will define the top of these rankings heading into Week 4.
No. 3 Seminole Ridge โ Hawks Are the Region’s Most Experienced Program Through Two Weeks
No program in the South Florida top 25 has played more games than Seminole Ridge. Seven games in two weeks โ four in Week 1 including three at the Broward County Girls Flag Football Classic, three in Week 2 โ have produced a 6-1 record and a schedule strength figure of 44.41 ranking 50th statewide. The Hawks beat Spanish River 31-14, then went into the Broward Classic and beat Dillard 39-0, Boyd Anderson 32-0, and Stoneman Douglas 34-0 across Week 1. The one blemish came in Week 2 when Park Vista beat them 13-7 on Feb. 24 โ and Park Vista now sits 10th in these rankings at 4-0, which means that loss reads better than it might have initially. Seminole Ridge responded by beating Lennard 39-19 and Land O Lakes 13-12 to close Week 2. There are no games listed for Seminole Ridge this week, which after seven games in two weeks may be exactly the rest the program needs before what figures to be a demanding stretch run.
