COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF: No. 100 Columbia Tigers — 2026 Season Preview, Schedule Analysis, Players to Watch and Playoff Outlook

Columbia does not ease into 2026. The Tigers open against a state runner-up, welcome another regional finalist seven days later and spend much of September trading punches with programs accustomed to playing beyond the regular season. Brian Allen has enough returning production to embrace that challenge, particularly along the defensive front and at the offensive skill positions. Transfer quarterback Amari Green now takes control of the offense, but his development must happen quickly because the schedule offers almost no rehearsal period.

Columbia’s 2025 turnaround was built on a defense that allowed 170 points and produced 54 sacks, 97 tackles for loss and 13 interceptions. The Tigers reached the Class 4A regional semifinals, but the graduation and transfer losses are substantial: their starting quarterback, three double-digit sack producers and several playmakers in the secondary are gone. The roster has not been emptied, though. It has been rearranged. Columbia still owns enough disruptive talent to make opposing offenses uncomfortable, and that gives Allen a foundation while the offense establishes its new identity.

The average does not fully capture the assignment. Columbia faces six opponents rated above 58, including five before the bye. The soft spots are obvious, but so are the cliffs.

The calendar is front-loaded, travel-heavy and unforgiving of offensive growing pains. Columbia also gets something valuable in return: a bye immediately before the two district games most likely to shape the championship race.

KEY LOSSES

The most visible departure is quarterback Xavier Collins, who transferred after throwing for 2,033 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2025. He accounted for virtually all of Columbia’s passing production and had three years of starting experience. Replacing the arm matters. Replacing the accumulated Friday-night decisions may matter more.

The defensive losses arrive in waves. Kameron Mills collected 78 tackles, 20 tackles for loss and 11 sacks. Terry Henry added 48 tackles, 15 tackles for loss and 11 sacks, while Kyten Davis supplied 60 tackles, 13 tackles for loss and seven sacks. That trio accounted for 29 of Columbia’s 54 sacks. The Tigers still have teeth up front, but nearly every opponent will test whether the new rotation can sustain the old pressure rate.

The secondary also loses Vondarius Lane and Julian De La Cruz, who combined for six interceptions, along with the transfer of Tacori Allen, a versatile defensive back and return specialist who produced 860 all-purpose yards. Columbia is not merely replacing starters. It is replacing possessions — sacks, takeaways and hidden yards that repeatedly tilted games in 2025.

Columbia’s summer adjustments became more complicated when linebacker Quinton Callum III suffered a ruptured patella tendon during basketball practice. Callum recorded 16 tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack and one interception as a freshman, and his absence removes a young, physical option from a linebacker group already replacing significant production. The Tigers have depth on paper. Now some of it will be forced into meaningful snaps earlier than planned.

Horne is the offensive hinge. His six-game sample was not empty production; he averaged 80.3 rushing yards per appearance and scored eight times. Caldwell gives the new quarterback situation a legitimate No. 1 target, while McCray, Underwood, Curry and Morgan give Columbia several ways to manufacture pressure without relying on one featured rusher.

1ST DOWN — THE GAUNTLET

Columbia’s defining stretch begins immediately. The Tigers travel to Bolles, return home for Lakewood and Madison County, then visit Trinity Christian two weeks later. Four of the first five opponents carry preseason ratings above 64. Those games are not merely difficult. They are stylistically demanding.

Bolles will test Columbia’s ability to survive long drives, win early downs and avoid allowing a physical game to become a possession squeeze. Lakewood brings another playoff-tested roster into Lake City one week later. There is no comfortable window for Green to find rhythm. He spent the spring at Baldwin after two seasons as Oakleaf’s junior varsity quarterback, and now his first extended varsity assignment begins against one of the deepest schedules in North Florida. That is a steep promotion.

That makes Horne essential. A stable running game can prevent the offense from living in third-and-long while protecting whoever wins the quarterback competition. Caldwell and Days must also provide accessible throws rather than requiring the passing game to live on low-percentage explosives.

Defensively, Columbia’s returning front has to become the team’s early-season stabilizer. McCray, Underwood, Curry and Morgan cannot replace 29 departed sacks by reputation. They have to do it by forcing the schedule’s best offenses to play behind the chains.

KNOW YOUR OPPONENT

Bolles is the measuring stick. Manatee is the endurance test. The Tigers travel more than 200 miles to Bradenton after playing six consecutive weeks, and the result will reveal whether the roster has developed depth or merely survived the opening month.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Columbia’s toughest opponents will not allow the Tigers to hide their quarterback transition or their rebuilt defensive rotation. Horne must control tempo, while McCray and the pass rush must keep games from turning into track meets.

2ND DOWN — STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE

The first seven weeks contain nearly every major stress point a developing quarterback can encounter: elite competition, contrasting defensive structures, road environments and limited recovery time. Columbia faces Bolles, Lakewood, Madison County, Trinity Christian and Manatee before reaching its bye. Each carries a preseason rating above Columbia’s schedule average.

Green has emerged as Columbia’s new quarterback after transferring during the summer. His arrival gives the Tigers clarity, but not certainty. He is stepping from limited varsity experience into an offense replacing a three-year starter, so the smartest path is to build around Horne, Caldwell and a defense capable of shortening games.

Caldwell’s route discipline and catch-point ability can become the quarterback room’s best friend. Horne can punish light boxes. Cook’s punting and kickoff work can reduce the number of long fields the defense must defend. Those are not supporting details. Against this schedule, they are survival mechanisms.

The back half is more manageable, but the stakes rise. After the bye, Columbia travels to Ed White and hosts Yulee in consecutive district games. Development must occur during the hard part because the Tigers will not have time to install a new identity in October.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Columbia has its quarterback, but it does not have the luxury of a slow introduction. Green must become efficient quickly, and the experienced talent around him must prevent the offense from asking him to win games by himself.

3RD DOWN — THE PROVING GROUND

Madison County and Trinity Christian are the first swing games. Columbia does not need to defeat every highly rated opponent to have a successful season, but it cannot allow the opening loss column to become crowded. Splitting those two games would steady the season. Winning both would change its trajectory.

The road trip to Manatee is a different kind of examination. It comes after six straight games and immediately before the bye. That is where depth, conditioning and emotional durability become visible. McCray and Underwood will be asked to hold up inside, while Curry, Morgan and Haywood must prevent explosive plays from escaping the structure of the defense. The linebacker rotation also deserves attention after Callum’s injury, particularly when Columbia faces opponents capable of forcing the Tigers to defend the run from sideline to sideline.

Ed White is the game that could reveal the most. The Commanders went 9-3 and reached the Class 4A regional semifinals in 2025. Columbia gets two weeks to prepare, but the game is on the road and carries direct district consequences. Grinstead’s tackling, Caldwell’s ability to win isolated matchups and Horne’s efficiency on early downs will matter more than any preseason talking point.

Yulee follows one week later. That pairing is the fulcrum. Columbia can survive losses to Bolles or Manatee. It cannot casually give away the Ed White-Yulee sequence and expect the district race to forgive it.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Madison County and Trinity Christian will show how quickly Columbia is growing. Ed White and Yulee will show whether that growth is enough to win something.

4TH DOWN — PLAYOFF PICTURE

Columbia enters District 4A-3 as its highest-rated team, but the margin is not commanding. The Tigers’ 60.64 preseason rating sits only 2.25 points ahead of Ed White, making the Oct. 16 trip to Jacksonville the district’s clearest leverage game.

An FHSAA district championship carries an automatic playoff bid. That makes victories over Ribault and Riverside mandatory business and turns the Ed White-Yulee stretch into the championship window. Columbia cannot spend September absorbing difficult losses and assume its preseason standing will protect it.

The wildcard path remains available through the MaxPreps rankings, which also influence playoff seeding. That is where the ambitious non-district schedule can help — provided Columbia wins enough of those games. Competitive losses may reveal progress, but they do not carry the same ranking value as victories over Lakewood, Madison County, Trinity Christian or Manatee.

Horne and Caldwell are tied directly to that path because Columbia needs dependable scoring against district opponents that will sell out to stop the run. Defensively, Curry, McCray, Underwood and Grinstead must keep Ed White and Yulee from dictating the fourth quarter.

This is a two-team race on paper, with Yulee positioned to disrupt it. Columbia owns the highest rating and hosts Yulee, but the trip to Ed White prevents the Tigers from claiming any structural advantage before kickoff.

THE BOTTOM LINE: The cleanest route is a district championship, and that route runs through Ed White. Columbia has the defensive front to win that game; the question is whether its reworked offense will be ready to finish it.

SEASON OUTLOOK

Difficulty Rating: 8/10

A 7-3 regular season is realistic, with 8-2 available if Green settles into the offense quickly and Horne remains healthy through the opening gauntlet. Columbia has the front-seven talent and district positioning to return to the playoff bracket, but Green’s limited varsity experience and Callum’s injury reduce the margin for error against the strongest portion of the schedule.
