COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF: No. 84 South Lake Eagles — 2026 Season Preview, Schedule Analysis, Players to Watch and Playoff Outlook

South Lake is no longer trying to prove Brad Lord’s rebuild works. An 11-win season, a district championship and a trip to the regional finals handled that. The question entering 2026 is sharper: Can a veteran quarterback and an experienced defense absorb substantial losses at running back, receiver and pass rusher without giving away ground against one of Central Florida’s more unforgiving schedules?

South Lake’s 2025 breakthrough was built on balance and disruption. The Eagles produced 4,955 yards of offense, forced 41 turnovers and registered 50 sacks while winning District 6A-6. Quarterback Tre Kelly accounted for 2,835 total yards and 38 touchdowns, but many of the players who turned those numbers into an 11-2 season have graduated. Eight returning offensive starters and seven returning defensive starters provide stability. They do not erase the production that walked out the door.

The overall average is manageable. The placement is not. South Lake gets its bye after opening night, then plays nine consecutive weeks with four opponents carrying preseason ratings above 70.

The Week 2 bye is useful for correcting opening-night problems. It is useless for late-season recovery. Once South Lake returns against The Villages, there is no pause before the regular-season finish.

KEY LOSSES

The largest vacancy is impossible to disguise. Malik Holman rushed for 1,656 yards at 8.6 yards per carry and added 10 total touchdowns. Tyrese Thompson contributed another 388 rushing yards and four touchdowns. South Lake is replacing more than a backfield. It is replacing the portion of the offense that made defenses pay for spreading out against Kelly.

The receiving losses are just as severe. Keydrick Powell produced 70 catches for 1,203 yards and nine touchdowns, while 6-foot-6 Isaiah Pina added 568 yards and 11 scores. Together, they accounted for nearly three-quarters of South Lake’s receiving yardage and 20 of its 25 receiving touchdowns. Kelly returns. His two most productive targets do not.

Defensively, the Eagles lose an outrageous amount of front-seven production. Jesse Barker Jr. recorded 104 tackles, 34 tackles for loss and 19 sacks. Tyson Williams and Chase Coello combined for 286 tackles and 34 tackles for loss, while Ramond Carter and Murphy Connelly combined for 10.5 sacks. That group did not merely stop drives. It wrecked them.

All-state kicker Christopher McKenna also departs after making nine field goals, including one from 47 yards, while averaging 43.9 yards per punt. South Lake must replace game-changing production in all three phases. That is the tax attached to a veteran-led 11-win season.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Kelly is the centerpiece, but Scott may be the defense’s most valuable problem-solver. Six interceptions as a sophomore demand attention. So does his ability to turn takeaways into points.

1ST DOWN — THE GAUNTLET

South Lake gets one game and one open week before the schedule changes speed. The Eagles return from their bye to visit a nine-win The Villages team, host The First Academy and travel to Bishop Moore. The last two opponents carry nearly identical preseason ratings above 73, while Bishop Moore enters after a 12-2 season and a state semifinal appearance.

The early bye gives the coaching staff time to evaluate the running-back rotation after East Ridge. It does not give that group time to grow slowly. Zaide Nance, Sam Wood, Khristian Gustave and Nezarian Russell are among the players competing to replace Holman’s production. By Week 3, South Lake needs more than promising practice reps. It needs a dependable rushing plan.

The other pressure point is literal pressure. Vasquez is the top returning pass rusher after recording 5.5 sacks, while Anthony Johnson and Brandon Dipaolo bring starting experience inside. They inherit a defense that recorded 50 sacks, but Barker alone accounted for 19. The standard remains. The shortcut is gone.

KNOW YOUR OPPONENT

THE BOTTOM LINE: South Lake’s most difficult three-game stretch begins immediately after the bye. Survive it at 2-1, and the Eagles will have proof that their returning experience is substantial rather than cosmetic.

2ND DOWN — STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE

South Lake gets East Ridge, an early bye and then a direct jump into The Villages, The First Academy and Bishop Moore. That arrangement creates preparation time, but not much live-game development.

Kelly changes the equation. South Lake does not have to teach a new quarterback how to manage protections or survive third-and-long against elite competition. A four-year starter who threw for 2,401 yards and rushed for 14 touchdowns gives the offense a stabilizer while Mason, Robinson, Sam Amarista, Brian Bedingfield and the rest of the receiving group take on larger assignments.

The second half is more relentless than overwhelming. Wekiva and Boca Ciega provide a softer bridge into consecutive road games against Evans and West Orange, but there is no midseason bye to reset tired legs. Lake Minneola and South Sumter then close the schedule. Depth will matter almost as much as star power.

THE BOTTOM LINE: The early bye helps South Lake prepare for September, but it offers nothing during the nine-game closing grind. The Eagles must develop quickly and stay healthy for a long time.

3RD DOWN — THE PROVING GROUND

The marquee games measure South Lake’s top-end ability. The swing games will decide whether the Eagles finish with seven wins or push toward nine.

The Villages is the first. A road win against a team coming off a 9-2 season would validate the work completed during the early bye and send South Lake into its two largest September tests with confidence. A loss would turn The First Academy and Bishop Moore into a difficult attempt to stop early momentum from disappearing.

Boca Ciega is another revealing spot. It falls between the opening district game against Wekiva and the defining trip to Evans. South Lake cannot treat it as a placeholder. Boca Ciega reached the regional quarterfinals in 2025, and a flat performance would suggest the Eagles are looking ahead.

South Sumter is the final examination. By Week 11, the offensive front led by Coning, Andrew Carter and Mark Elder must still be functional, and Scott, McKinnond and Robinson must still be producing takeaways. There is no open week available to restore either group.

THE BOTTOM LINE: The Villages tests South Lake’s readiness, Boca Ciega tests its concentration and South Sumter tests its endurance. Championship-level teams pass all three kinds of exams.

4TH DOWN — PLAYOFF PICTURE

South Lake’s district path includes three clearly defined steps. Wekiva and Lake Minneola combined for two wins in 2025 and enter with preseason ratings of 21.01 and 10.91. Evans is the separator. The Oct. 9 trip to Orlando will likely determine whether South Lake controls the district race or has to monitor the wildcard standings.

Winning District 5A-4 would secure an automatic playoff bid. Failing to win it would send South Lake into the wildcard race, where MaxPreps rankings determine qualification and seeding. That makes The Villages, The First Academy, Bishop Moore, Boca Ciega, West Orange and South Sumter part of the playoff equation even though none is a district opponent.

Kelly’s experience matters in a game of Evans’ magnitude. So does a secondary featuring Scott, McKinnond and Robinson. Evans brings the district’s highest preseason rating and reached the regional quarterfinals last season. South Lake brings the deeper recent playoff run. Something has to give.

DISTRICT BREAKDOWN

THE BOTTOM LINE: South Lake’s cleanest route is direct: handle Wekiva and Lake Minneola, then beat Evans for the automatic bid. The wildcard path remains realistic, but this schedule is too demanding to leave qualification entirely in the hands of a ranking formula.

SEASON OUTLOOK

Difficulty Rating: 8/10

A 7-3 regular season is a realistic projection, with 8-2 available if the new running rotation emerges quickly and the returning defenders replace enough of last season’s pass-rush production. The early bye helps South Lake prepare, but the nine-game closing stretch could limit the ceiling if injuries or depth problems begin to accumulate.
