Bishop Verot enters 2026 with the kind of roster that invites both confidence and caution. The Vikings return proven playmakers in Ayden Gonzalez, Robenson Duclona and Jy German, but they must replace most of their rushing production, settle an open quarterback competition and rebuild the middle of the defense. Richie Rode’s team has enough talent to win District 3A-13. The schedule will make it earn every inch.

Bishop Verot’s 2025 season was a strange blend of struggle and survival. The Vikings finished 5-7, allowed nine more points than they scored and never found dependable offensive balance, yet still advanced to a regional semifinal. That postseason run matters. It showed the program could take a punch without folding, but seven losses also made the offseason assignment obvious: the margin for uneven football has disappeared.

The headline number is not the average rating. It is the .733 combined winning percentage. Bishop Verot will spend most Fridays facing teams accustomed to controlling games, which means improvement cannot remain theoretical for long.

There are no empty-calorie dates before the bye. Even the lower-rated opponents arrive with winning records, and the final month includes three road games or playoff-caliber opposition. The schedule does not gradually ask Bishop Verot whether it is ready. It demands an answer.

KEY LOSSES

The backfield must be rebuilt after losing Macrae Thompson and Deshon Jenkins Jr., who combined for 1,536 rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns in 2025. Thompson carried the largest workload, producing 901 yards on 144 attempts, while Jenkins averaged 8.6 yards per carry and added 635 yards despite playing only nine games. That is not merely lost production. It is the disappearance of the offense’s most reliable escape route.

Quarterback Austan Cristiaan also departed after completing 100 of 185 passes for 1,272 yards and eight touchdowns. His numbers were uneven, including nine interceptions, but he handled nearly every meaningful varsity attempt. Bishop Verot now enters the season with a genuine quarterback competition rather than an established successor.

The defense loses its two leading tacklers in JJ Bolz and Micah Anderson, who combined for 146 tackles. Dwyer Camron’s four sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss also leave a noticeable hole in the pressure package, while Eli Cochran and Justin Rode take four interceptions and 110 combined tackles out of the secondary.

That is substantial turnover through the spine of the roster. Bishop Verot is not replacing one star. It is replacing the structure that held several units together.

Gonzalez is the obvious offensive centerpiece. He accounted for nearly half of Bishop Verot’s receptions and receiving yards, and his 34 carries showed he can be moved around to manufacture touches. The Vikings need more than another productive season from him. They need defenses to build entire game plans around finding him.

Duclona and German give Bishop Verot an experienced, recruitable defensive backfield. Duclona is the more disruptive box presence, while German brings range and return value. Together, they provide the defense with something valuable during a transition year: two players who should not need the game slowed down for them.

Peak owns the most meaningful returning quarterback experience, but 18 attempts do not settle a competition. His development — along with that of Terrance Taylor and the rest of the quarterback room — will determine whether the offense can become more efficient or remains dependent on isolated explosive plays.

1ST DOWN — THE GAUNTLET

The hardest stretch arrives immediately after the bye: Lely, Port Charlotte, Island Coast, Fort Pierce Central and Cypress Lake. Four of those games affect either district control or postseason positioning, and three require travel. Island Coast offers a breather on paper, but the surrounding dates do not.

Port Charlotte is the centerpiece. The Pirates own the schedule’s highest preseason rating and reached a state semifinal in 2025. Bishop Verot then travels to Fort Pierce Central two weeks later against a team that won 10 games and advanced in Florida’s largest classification. That is a punishing combination of physicality, travel and consequence.

Gonzalez will have to supply efficient touches when the running game stalls. Bishop Verot cannot replace 1,536 departed rushing yards by simply handing the ball to one new player and hoping. The answer will likely require multiple backs, designed touches for Gonzalez and a quarterback capable of keeping defenses honest.

Defensively, Duclona, Bauer and Pierre must replace Camron’s pressure production. Duclona is already proven behind the line of scrimmage, while Bauer recorded two sacks in limited action. The pass rush does not need to become spectacular. It needs to become dependable before Port Charlotte and Fort Pierce Central can turn long drives into long nights.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Bishop Verot’s defining stretch is less about surviving one powerhouse than repeatedly answering physical questions. The Vikings will learn quickly whether their new backfield and reworked pass rush are functional solutions or merely offseason possibilities.

2ND DOWN — STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE

The front half is built to expose offensive uncertainty. John Carroll won eight games, Jesuit reached a regional final, Riverdale advanced to a state semifinal and Williston reached a regional final. Bishop Verot cannot use September as an extended preseason for its quarterbacks.

That makes the bye enormously valuable. Richie Rode will have four games of evidence before district play begins against Lely. By then, the coaching staff should know which quarterback best protects the football, whether Gonzalez needs an even larger share of the offense and which linemen can hold up when opponents know a pass is coming.

Peak has some varsity experience, and Taylor brings intriguing size, but neither should be declared the answer before earning it. The competition must be decided by command, accuracy and decision-making. Bishop Verot threw as many interceptions as touchdowns last season. Talent matters. Possession matters more.

The late schedule is not necessarily harder from top to bottom, but it is less forgiving. Port Charlotte, Fort Pierce Central and Palmetto can all punish stalled drives, while the district road trip to Cypress Lake carries direct playoff consequences. Development time exists. Comfortable development time does not.

THE BOTTOM LINE: This schedule can accelerate the quarterback room or overwhelm it. Bishop Verot’s ceiling rises dramatically if the offense identifies a steady distributor before the bye instead of carrying the competition into October.

3RD DOWN — THE PROVING GROUND

Riverdale and Lely are the clearest measuring-stick games.

Riverdale arrives in Week 3 after a 12-win season and a state-semifinal appearance. It is not a district game, but it will reveal whether Bishop Verot can match a larger-class contender without allowing one bad quarter to decide the night. Gonzalez should see bracket coverage, forcing Pierre, Fletcher and the remaining receivers to prove they can punish defensive attention elsewhere.

Lely is more consequential. It opens district play immediately after the bye and sits close enough to Bishop Verot in the preseason ratings that neither side can claim a meaningful analytical advantage. That game will test whether the Vikings used the first month to improve or merely accumulated scars.

Duclona and German should be central to both tests. Riverdale will challenge their ability to limit explosive plays. Lely will test their discipline in a game where field position and one takeaway could decide district leverage. Lee also enters the spotlight after contributing as a freshman on defense and returns. A sophomore jump from him would give Bishop Verot valuable flexibility in the secondary.

Williston and Palmetto matter for a different reason. Both come with double-digit-win credentials, but one arrives before the bye and the other closes the regular season. Comparing Bishop Verot’s performance in those games will show how far the roster traveled between September and late October.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Riverdale will reveal Bishop Verot’s competitive ceiling. Lely will reveal whether that ceiling matters in the district race. The Vikings need both answers to be encouraging.

4TH DOWN — PLAYOFF PICTURE

District 3A-13 gives Bishop Verot a direct route into the playoff bracket. Win the district, and the Vikings earn an automatic bid. Miss that opportunity, and their postseason future shifts to the MaxPreps rankings, which determine wildcard selection and seeding.

The district math is favorable but not automatic. Bishop Verot enters with the highest preseason rating among the four teams shown, followed by Lely and Cypress Lake. Island Coast is a game the Vikings should control. The district title is more likely to turn on Lely at home and Cypress Lake on the road.

That makes the broader schedule useful even when it is uncomfortable. Competitive performances against Jesuit, Riverdale, Port Charlotte, Fort Pierce Central and Palmetto can strengthen Bishop Verot’s MaxPreps profile, but only if the Vikings also handle the games they are expected to win. Strength of schedule is valuable. It is not a substitute for victories.

Gonzalez, Duclona and German are the players most directly tied to that path. Gonzalez must generate offense in close district games. Duclona must create negative plays before drives reach the red zone. German’s ability to affect field position as a defender and returner could swing the type of one-score game that separates a district champion from a wildcard hopeful.
