COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF: No. 75 Miami Palmetto Panthers — 2026 Season Preview, Schedule Analysis, Players to Watch and Playoff Outlook

Miami Palmetto has moved beyond the stage where a winning season alone counts as progress. The Panthers went 11-3, played 14 games and reached the 7A state semifinals in 2025. That run raised the standard. Now comes the harder part: replacing a quarterback who produced 39 total touchdowns and a senior class that supplied much of the passing game, secondary production and leadership. Mike Manasco’s roster still has enough returning force to contend. It just has less room for uncertainty.

The 2025 Panthers paired an explosive offense with one of South Florida’s more disruptive defensive fronts. Miami Palmetto accumulated 4,680 yards, scored 69 touchdowns and averaged more than 35 points per game. The defense recorded 119 tackles for loss and 42 sacks. Those numbers explain the semifinal run, but they also frame the challenge ahead. Much of the offense’s passing production graduated, and several of the defense’s most experienced players left with it.

The overall numbers suggest a manageable schedule. The placement of the difficult games says otherwise. Miami Palmetto faces three winning teams before opening district play, then closes the known portion of the schedule with road games against South Dade and Naples. The Panthers will have opportunities to breathe. They will not have permission to drift.

There are 10 regular-season games: nine known opponents and one GMAC Series matchup that remains to be determined. That unresolved date matters. Depending on the pairing, the middle of October could become either a useful tuneup or another substantial test before the trip to South Dade.

KEY LOSSES

Andre Bailey leaves the largest vacancy. He completed 174 of 278 passes for 2,598 yards and 31 touchdowns against seven interceptions. He also rushed for 358 yards and eight scores. Bailey did more than produce numbers. He gave Miami Palmetto an answer when the structure of a play disappeared.

The receiving turnover is extensive. Conneilus Miller Jr. led the Panthers with 56 catches for 824 yards and nine touchdowns. Robert Richardson, Willie Wilson and Sam Althuis combined for 54 receptions, 788 yards and 11 scores. Varian Terry added 621 yards from scrimmage and 10 touchdowns. Miami Palmetto is not replacing one target. It is rebuilding most of the passing hierarchy.

The defense loses its most productive pass rusher in Jaiden Henry, who totaled 67 tackles, 30 tackles for loss, 14 sacks and six forced fumbles. Wynton Jones Jr., Braylen Green and Marko Fernandez combined for 207 tackles and six interceptions in the secondary. Kevin White Jr. added two interceptions. That is a considerable amount of experience leaving from the back end.

The Panthers still have talent. What graduated was certainty.

Butler is the centerpiece. He averaged 8.0 yards per carry, produced four 100-yard rushing games and scored once every 8.4 rushing attempts. His value extends beyond volume because he also caught 20 passes. Defenses cannot treat him as a one-dimensional runner.

Kaden Howard becomes the most established returning receiver after averaging 20.4 yards per catch. On defense, Brandon Howard is the proven game-wrecker. His 19 tackles for loss, nine sacks and five forced fumbles make him the player most capable of changing a possession by himself.

1ST DOWN — THE GAUNTLET

Miami Palmetto’s most difficult stretch is the first four weeks.

Killian and Mater Academy each went 8-3 last season. Neither carries an elite preseason rating, but both are capable of punishing a team still sorting out its offensive structure. The difficulty then spikes against Southridge, the No. 26 team in the preseason rankings with a 77.70 rating. Six days later, Palmetto must reset for its district opener against Columbus.

That is a difficult sequence for an offense replacing Bailey and most of its leading receivers. Butler gives the Panthers a dependable answer on the ground, but opponents will devote extra bodies to stopping him until the passing game demands otherwise. Kaden Howard must become more than an occasional explosive target. He must become a consistent solution.

The defensive front can buy the offense time. Brandon Howard, Weston, Francis and Balthazar combined for 28 sacks or tackles for loss in 2025. Miami Palmetto will need that group to produce negative plays, shorten possessions and prevent early games from becoming scoring contests.

Southridge is the schedule’s highest-rated opponent and the first true stress test. Naples comes at the opposite end of the calendar, when development is no longer an acceptable excuse. One game measures Palmetto’s starting point. The other measures what the Panthers became.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Butler and the pass rush give Miami Palmetto enough established production to survive an uneven start, but the Panthers cannot enter the Columbus game still searching for an offensive identity.

2ND DOWN — STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE

The schedule is not relentless, but it is strategically uncomfortable.

Miami Palmetto opens against two teams that won eight games, travels to Southridge and then begins district play on a short week against Columbus. The middle section is considerably lighter. Coral Gables, Southwest Miami and Homestead combined to go 8-20 in 2025, and the bye arrives before the Homestead game. That stretch gives the Panthers room to develop. It also gives them no excuse not to.

Quarterback is the defining developmental issue. Bailey accounted for nearly all of Palmetto’s passing production, but the Panthers should not force the next quarterback to imitate him. The immediate job is simpler: protect the football, complete routine throws and prevent defenses from treating every early down as a Butler run.

Howard’s ability to stretch the field will matter. So will an offensive line that returns players such as Ari Cromartie, Rashad Fuller and Julian Sanchez. The offense does not need to become pass-first. It needs to make loaded boxes expensive.

The defense faces a similar transition in the secondary. Weston and Veargis provide experience, but the Panthers must replace several defensive backs who handled major snap counts and takeaway production. The softer middle of the schedule should allow that unit to settle before the late trip to Naples.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Miami Palmetto has enough difficult games to expose every weakness and enough manageable games to correct them. The season will be defined by whether the Panthers use that middle stretch to improve rather than merely accumulate wins.

3RD DOWN — THE PROVING GROUND

Southridge is the headline game. Columbus and South Dade are the games that may define the season.

Columbus went 4-8 in 2025, but its 55.90 preseason rating is the strongest among Miami Palmetto’s district opponents. The Explorers arrive six days after the Southridge game, creating a test of recovery and concentration. A young offense cannot spend the week replaying what happened at Southridge. District play begins immediately.

South Dade presents the late-season test. Miami Palmetto travels there Oct. 22, after the bye, Homestead and the GMAC Series game. By then, the quarterback competition should be resolved. The receiver rotation should be established. The rebuilt secondary should no longer be rebuilding.

Those games will also reveal whether Brandon Howard and the returning front can handle the burden left by Henry’s graduation. Howard cannot be the only source of pressure. Balthazar, Francis, Guerrero, Diaz and Jackson must make offenses account for more than one gap or one edge.

Butler’s usage will provide another clue. If he is still carrying the entire offense by late October, Palmetto will be easier to defend in the postseason. If Kaden Howard and the passing game have created balance, the Panthers become much more difficult to reduce to a single matchup.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Columbus will test Miami Palmetto’s discipline. South Dade will test its growth. Winning both would put the Panthers in command of the district and show that the roster developed around its returning stars.

4TH DOWN — PLAYOFF PICTURE

Miami Palmetto enters the season as the highest-rated team in District 6A-16. That makes the Panthers the logical favorite. It does not make the district automatic.

Winning the district remains the cleanest postseason route because an FHSAA district champion receives an automatic playoff bid. The Sept. 10 game against Columbus is therefore more valuable than its opponent’s 4-8 record might suggest. The Oct. 22 trip to South Dade carries similar weight.

If Miami Palmetto does not win the district, the Panthers can still reach the playoff bracket through the wildcard process. MaxPreps rankings determine wildcard selection and seeding, making the games against Southridge, Naples and the eventual GMAC opponent important beyond the standings. Quality wins can strengthen Palmetto’s profile. A loss against one of the district’s lower-rated teams would be much more damaging.

Butler gives Miami Palmetto a playoff-ready offensive foundation. Brandon Howard, Weston and Francis provide proven defensive disruption. The playoff ceiling will depend on whether the passing game becomes credible enough to punish teams that commit extra defenders to the run.

The ratings establish a clear order. Miami Palmetto owns a meaningful advantage over every district opponent, but Columbus is close enough to turn one uneven Thursday night into a season-long complication.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Miami Palmetto should win District 6A-16. Doing so would secure the automatic bid and allow the Panthers to treat Southridge, Naples and the GMAC Series as opportunities to improve their seeding rather than games needed to rescue their postseason position.

SEASON OUTLOOK

Difficulty Rating: 7/10

An 8-2 regular season is the most realistic projection, with a range of 7-3 to 9-1 depending on the quarterback transition and the eventual GMAC Series opponent. Miami Southridge and Naples are the two toughest known tests, while Columbus is capable of complicating the district race; for Palmetto to reach its ceiling, Butler must remain the offensive anchor, the passing game must become functional and the veteran front must protect a reworked secondary.
