COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF: No. 69 Lakeland Christian Vikings — 2026 Season Preview, Schedule Analysis, Players to Watch and Playoff Outlook

Lakeland Christian rarely lacks ambition. Danny Williams’ program will attack a schedule featuring a state champion, an out-of-state runner-up and several opponents capable of punishing mistakes. The Vikings have the experience to trade punches with that group. The question is whether they have enough defensive disruption left to finish those fights.

Lakeland Christian’s 8-3 finish in 2025 was built around an offense that produced 4,022 yards and averaged 33.3 points. Brody Brenneman threw for 2,174 yards and 25 touchdowns, while AJ Truedell rushed for 1,077 yards and added another 197 through the air. That foundation remains intact. The rebuild is concentrated around them, especially after the Vikings lost their most productive receiver and three of their most disruptive senior defenders.

The average does not fully capture the top of this schedule. Deerfield-Windsor and American Heritage create two heavyweight tests, while Saint Andrew’s and Sebring make September far more demanding than a routine opening month.

The Vikings receive one well-placed break. Their bye separates the trip to Deerfield-Windsor from the visit by American Heritage, giving them time to recover before the schedule demands another full-speed collision.

KEY LOSSES

Devonte Howard leaves the largest hole. He caught 67 passes for 1,067 yards and 13 touchdowns, accounting for nearly half of Lakeland Christian’s receiving yardage. He also intercepted three passes and contributed in the return game. Replacing the receptions is one task. Replacing the weekly attention he commanded is another.

The defense loses serious edge production. Davin Sirmons Jr. recorded 76 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss and four sacks, while AJ Phillips added 58 tackles, nine tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. Caleb McDonald’s 76 tackles and seven tackles for loss also depart.

Colton Pierce’s 159 rushing yards, two touchdowns and 50 tackles added dependable two-way depth. Several experienced linemen graduated as well, including Lomont Owens, William Aqui, Keelan Jones and Bobby Lane. The Vikings did not merely lose seniors. They lost much of the supporting structure around their stars.

This group is strong where championship-level teams prefer to be strong: quarterback, running back, linebacker and the interior line. The concern is concentrated at receiver, where Straub must move from productive secondary option to primary target.

1ST DOWN — THE GAUNTLET

The defining stretch begins with Saint Andrew’s, continues at Sebring and Moore Haven, then peaks with consecutive tests against Deerfield-Windsor and American Heritage on either side of the bye. Four of those five opponents carry preseason ratings above 55. The fifth is a district road game.

Truedell will be central to surviving that run. His ability to turn ordinary blocking into explosive gains can keep Lakeland Christian out of long-yardage situations and prevent opposing pass rushers from dictating the game. On defense, Bustos must prove that his 12.5-sack season was the beginning of something larger, not a one-year spike.

Deerfield-Windsor will test Lakeland Christian’s ability to handle a physical road environment. American Heritage will test everything else. There are no empty possessions against opponents of this quality.

THE BOTTOM LINE: The Vikings do not need to sweep the gauntlet to validate themselves, but they cannot repeatedly lose control at the line of scrimmage. Truedell and Bustos are the players most capable of keeping the schedule from becoming the story.

2ND DOWN — STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE

The front end offers Lakeland Christian a chance to settle in. Santa Fe Catholic opens the season, and McLaughlin follows before the schedule climbs sharply with Fort Meade, Saint Andrew’s and Sebring. That sequence matters because this is not an offense starting from scratch. Brenneman and Truedell already know how to produce together.

The developmental issue is the passing hierarchy behind Howard. Straub is the leading returning receiver after posting 463 yards and six touchdowns, while Jayden Wall and JD McCoy flashed big-play ability in smaller roles. Brenneman has experience, accuracy and mobility. He does not yet have an established replacement for a 1,000-yard target.

The late schedule is less forgiving. After the bye and American Heritage, the Vikings travel to Victory Christian for what could become the district’s deciding game. There is little room for an offense still searching for its identity by mid-October.

THE BOTTOM LINE: The schedule gives Brenneman time to build chemistry, not time to waste. By the Saint Andrew’s game, the Vikings need to know who can win when defenses load the box against Truedell.

3RD DOWN — THE PROVING GROUND

Fort Meade is the first revealing game. It is a district matchup against a 7-4 opponent that reached the 2025 postseason, and it arrives before Lakeland Christian’s toughest non-district work. A convincing performance would suggest the Vikings are ready to control District 1A-7. A struggle would invite every district opponent into the race.

The road trip to Sebring is another useful measuring stick. Sebring’s 2025 record was modest, but its 55.92 preseason rating places it well above most of Lakeland Christian’s district opposition. That game will expose whether the rebuilt defensive front can hold up against a larger-school opponent.

Victory Christian is the true swing game. Its 50.78 rating is the highest among the Vikings’ district opponents, and the Oct. 23 date gives the matchup direct postseason weight. Calhoun, Hammonds, Riley and Bustos will be asked to turn experience into control. Brenneman and Truedell will be asked to finish drives when possessions become scarce.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Fort Meade will reveal Lakeland Christian’s floor. Victory Christian will reveal its ceiling. The Vikings’ veteran core must make sure those two answers are not far apart.

4TH DOWN — PLAYOFF PICTURE

Lakeland Christian’s cleanest route into the playoff bracket is the District 1A-7 championship, which carries an automatic bid. That puts Fort Meade, Moore Haven and Victory Christian at the center of the season, regardless of how much attention the non-district showdowns attract.

Victory Christian begins as the district’s closest preseason challenger, but Lakeland Christian owns a significant rating advantage over the rest of the field. That advantage must be demonstrated, not admired. District road games at Moore Haven and Victory Christian create enough danger to punish a team that arrives distracted.

A wildcard remains available through the MaxPreps rankings if the Vikings do not win the district. The games against Saint Andrew’s, Sebring, Deerfield-Windsor and American Heritage could strengthen Lakeland Christian’s ranking and seeding profile, provided the Vikings remain competitive and accumulate enough wins around them.

Bustos, Calhoun, Hammonds and Riley give Lakeland Christian the returning defensive core to control district play. Brenneman and Truedell give the offense a postseason-caliber foundation. The path is clear. The margin for sloppy district football is not.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Lakeland Christian should be the district favorite, but Victory Christian has enough quality to make the finale meaningful. Winning the district would remove uncertainty; leaving the decision to the wildcard rankings would turn every difficult non-district loss into a nervous November calculation.

SEASON OUTLOOK

Difficulty Rating: 8/10

An 8-2 regular season is realistic, with 7-3 representing the safer projection if the rebuilt receiving corps and defensive front need time. Lakeland Christian can win District 1A-7 and make a meaningful playoff run if Brenneman remains efficient, Truedell stays healthy and Bustos leads another disruptive defense, but the schedule is strong enough to cap the ceiling quickly if any of those pillars slips.
