SPACE & TREASURE COAST POWER 10: Vero Beach Holds No. 1 Ahead of National Test, Martin County Surges to No. 6

The top four spots in the Space & Treasure Coast Power 10 remain unchanged after Week 2, but the story underneath them is beginning to shift.

Vero Beach stays No. 1 after beating Atlantic 45-30 to improve to 2-0, while Cocoa remains No. 2 and Merritt Island holds No. 3 after following its Week 1 win over Cocoa with a 35-7 victory over Melbourne. Eau Gallie remains No. 4 after answering its opening loss with a dominant 41-0 shutout of Heritage.

The biggest movement comes from Martin County, which climbs three positions to No. 6 after improving to 2-0 with a 21-16 win over Santaluces. With several teams around the middle of the Power 10 also producing strong early results, the region is quickly becoming more crowded behind Vero Beach.

Vero Beach Remains the Standard

Vero Beach has backed up its No. 1 ranking with consecutive victories, following its 34-0 opening shutout of Jensen Beach with a 45-30 win over Atlantic in Week 2.

The second game required a much different performance. After allowing nothing in the opener, the Indians found themselves in a higher-scoring contest against Atlantic and responded with 45 points of their own. That gives Vero Beach two different kinds of wins through the first two weeks and keeps the Indians firmly in control of the regional rankings.

The schedule now takes a dramatic step upward. Vero Beach will not simply be trying to protect the No. 1 ranking in Week 3; the Indians will get an opportunity to make a statement against one of the most recognizable national programs in high school football.

Merritt Island Continues to Put Pressure on Cocoa

Merritt Island produced the result that changed the conversation near the top of the region in Week 1, beating Cocoa 44-19. The Mustangs made sure that victory did not stand alone by following it with a 35-7 win over Melbourne.

At 2-0, Merritt Island has now won consecutive games by 25 and 28 points. The Mustangs remain No. 3 behind Cocoa, but the head-to-head result creates an obvious storyline that will become increasingly important as preseason influence fades from the FPRI.

Cocoa still owns the stronger overall rating profile and remains No. 2, but Merritt Island has supplied the current-season evidence that matters most when comparing the two directly. The longer the Mustangs continue winning, the more pressure that puts on the order near the top.

Eau Gallie Responds, Martin County Surges

Eau Gallie needed a response after a difficult opening loss and delivered one emphatically. The Commodores shut out Heritage 41-0 in Week 2, giving the FPRI a dramatically different second result and keeping Eau Gallie at No. 4.

Martin County is moving in the opposite direction from the teams struggling to recover. The Tigers climb three positions to No. 6 after beating Santaluces 21-16, improving to 2-0 after a 17-14 victory over Treasure Coast in the opener.

Neither Martin County win has been easy, but both have been meaningful. The Tigers have finished two close games and now own a direct victory over Treasure Coast along with another quality win against Santaluces. That is enough to make Martin County one of the most important risers in this week’s regional rankings.

Several Teams Keep Building Strong Starts

The middle and lower portions of the Power 10 remain crowded because several teams continue stacking victories.

Melbourne Central Catholic improved to 2-0 with a 35-28 win over Benjamin after opening with a 44-12 victory over Victory Christian. The Hustlers have now won a comfortable game and a one-score game, providing two useful early data points.

Satellite has taken a much more dominant path, following a 52-0 win over Halifax Academy with a 56-0 shutout of Legacy Charter. The Scorpions have outscored their first two opponents 108-0, and while the FPRI caps the impact of runaway margins, consecutive shutouts still matter.

Viera is also 2-0 after beating Sebastian River 35-8, one week after edging Rockledge 25-20. Titusville has likewise started unbeaten, while John Carroll has continued adding positive results of its own.

That depth is what makes Martin County’s jump to No. 6 especially notable. There are several teams producing strong starts, yet the Tigers still gained three positions.

Week 3 Spotlight: Vero Beach Hosts St. Frances Academy

The biggest game involving a Space & Treasure Coast team this week is at the Citrus Bowl, where Vero Beach hosts St. Frances Academy of Maryland at 7 p.m. Friday.

This is not a routine non-district game. St. Frances has built its program around a national schedule and regularly faces elite competition from across the country, giving Vero Beach an opportunity to test itself on a much larger stage.

The Indians enter 2-0 after beating Jensen Beach 34-0 and Atlantic 45-30, but Week 3 represents a significant rise in difficulty. A strong showing against St. Frances would tell us considerably more about Vero Beach than another typical early-season matchup and could become one of the defining results on the Indians’ schedule.

For the region’s No. 1 team, this is exactly the kind of game that can validate a ranking beyond the local level.

Cocoa, Eau Gallie and John Carroll Get Major Opportunities

Vero Beach-St. Frances leads the Week 3 conversation, but it is far from the only important game involving the Power 10.

Cocoa travels to Newberry at 7:30 p.m. as the Tigers look to add another current-season result after the Week 1 loss to Merritt Island. With Cocoa still sitting No. 2, every new game becomes increasingly important as preseason influence continues to diminish.

Eau Gallie travels to Sanford to face Seminole at 7 p.m., giving the Commodores another substantial test immediately after their 41-0 response against Heritage.

John Carroll also gets a significant opportunity when Cardinal Newman visits Sam Budnyk Stadium. The Rams have started the season well, and Friday provides the kind of matchup capable of adding meaningful strength to their early résumé.

Martin County Looks to Keep Climbing

Martin County enters Week 3 with momentum after climbing three places to No. 6.

The Tigers have shown through two weeks that they can handle close games, beating Treasure Coast 17-14 and Santaluces 21-16. Now they turn their attention to Royal Palm Beach as they look to reach 3-0.

Another victory would give Martin County three straight positive results at a time when the FPRI is rapidly shifting away from preseason expectations. After entering the season outside the upper half of the regional Power 10, the Tigers are now one of the teams putting pressure on everyone ahead of them.

The Top Is Stable, but the Region Is Not

Vero Beach, Cocoa, Merritt Island and Eau Gallie remain in the same first four positions, but that stability should not be mistaken for a lack of change.

Merritt Island is 2-0 and owns a head-to-head victory over Cocoa. Martin County has climbed three spots to No. 6 after consecutive close wins. Melbourne Central Catholic, Satellite and Viera are also unbeaten, while Eau Gallie has already demonstrated its ability to rebound from a difficult opening result.

The region now enters a Week 3 slate highlighted by something even bigger: Vero Beach hosting St. Frances Academy in a game with significance well beyond the Space & Treasure Coast.

That is the matchup that deserves the spotlight. Vero Beach has protected the No. 1 ranking through two weeks; Friday night gives the Indians an opportunity to show how that standing holds up against national-level competition.
