SPACE & TREASURE COAST POWER 10: Vero Beach Holds No. 1 as Merritt Island Rises and Cocoa Tumbles

Vero Beach remains atop the region despite a loss to St. Frances Academy, Merritt Island climbs to No. 2 after winning at Ponte Vedra, and Space Coast and Jensen Beach make major moves into the upper half of the Power 10.

The Space & Treasure Coast Power 10 undergoes one of its most significant reshufflings of the young season after a Week 3 that produced very different results among the region’s highest-rated teams.

Vero Beach remains No. 1 despite a 38-6 loss to nationally prominent St. Frances Academy, while Merritt Island climbs into the No. 2 position after earning a 45-37 road victory over Ponte Vedra. John Carroll moves into the top three despite a difficult loss to Cardinal Newman, while Eau Gallie remains No. 4 following its setback against unbeaten Seminole.

The largest changes come farther down. Space Coast climbs five positions after overwhelming Celebration 48-0, Jensen Beach surges six spots following a 24-3 win over South Fork, and Cocoa falls seven positions from No. 2 to No. 9 after its 14-13 loss at Newberry. Martin County also drops four places after a lopsided district loss to Royal Palm Beach.

FPRI Methodology Update

Readers may notice more movement than usual in this week’s FPRI rankings.

After reviewing how the first three weeks of the 2026 season were being reflected in the model, several refinements were made to better balance preseason expectations with actual on-field results. The changes were applied consistently across the entire statewide dataset and were not made to benefit or penalize individual teams.

The biggest update involves head-to-head results. FPRI now gives stronger recognition to statement wins over teams that entered a game rated significantly higher, but it does so in a controlled way. Rather than automatically transferring the defeated opponent’s full rating to the winner, the system moves the winning team part of the way toward that opponent’s pregame strength.

The model also now considers what happens after that win. A later loss to an elite or higher-rated opponent does not erase the value of an earlier statement victory, while a later loss to a significantly lower-rated opponent can reduce how much of that head-to-head boost remains.

Quality wins were also refined. Instead of using hard rating cutoffs that could create abrupt jumps in bonus value, the quality-win component now uses a smoother scale and gives more consideration to current-season performance when a team has already exceeded its preseason expectation.

A 35-point per-game margin-of-victory cap has also been added to the rating calculation. Actual scores and point differentials remain unchanged in the published statistics, but margins beyond 35 points no longer continue increasing a team’s rating. This helps prevent extreme blowouts from carrying too much weight in the overall formula.

Preseason ratings still remain part of FPRI early in the season because the sample size is small, but that influence continues to decline as more games are played and more 2026 data becomes available. Because these refinements are being applied to games already played this season, some teams may make larger-than-normal moves in this week’s rankings.

That movement is expected as the model adjusts to the stronger body of current-season evidence. As the season progresses, FPRI should naturally become more stable while remaining responsive to meaningful wins, losses, opponent strength and head-to-head results.

Vero Beach Holds No. 1 Despite Loss to St. Frances Academy

Vero Beach remains No. 1 in the Space & Treasure Coast despite suffering its first loss of the season, and the strength of the opponent provides important context for why the Indians stay on top.

St. Frances Academy came to the Citrus Bowl at Billy Livings Field and defeated Vero Beach 38-6. The result drops the Indians five positions statewide to No. 18, but their 81.39 FPRI rating remains comfortably the best in the region.

The most important number surrounding Vero Beach may be its 27.5 strength-of-schedule rating, which is by far the strongest among the current regional top 10. The FPRI does not view every loss equally, and a defeat against a high-level opponent carries substantially different information than a loss to a much weaker team.

That does not mean the 32-point margin is ignored. It is part of Vero Beach’s current-season performance and does pull the rating downward. But the quality of competition helps keep the result from completely overwhelming the rest of the Indians’ profile.

Vero Beach still leads No. 2 Merritt Island by 8.11 rating points, providing much more separation at the top than several of the other regional rankings around the state.

Week 4 begins district play when Vero Beach travels to Centennial, giving the Indians an immediate opportunity to respond to the loss with a result against another Space & Treasure Coast opponent.

Merritt Island Climbs to No. 2 After Road Win at Ponte Vedra

Merritt Island produces the strongest upward move among the teams near the top of the Power 10.

The Mustangs traveled to Northeast Florida and defeated Ponte Vedra 45-37, climbing one regional position to No. 2 with a 73.28 FPRI rating. Their statewide movement is much larger, with Merritt Island rising 18 spots to No. 37.

The victory is significant because it adds another road result against an opponent outside the immediate region, giving the FPRI a useful cross-regional comparison. Ponte Vedra had already played close games against University Christian and Bishop Kenny, so the result connects Merritt Island to a growing network of Northeast Florida teams.

Merritt Island’s position also becomes more notable because of the movement around it. Cocoa entered Week 3 at No. 2 but fell sharply following its loss to Newberry, opening the door for the Mustangs to become Vero Beach’s closest regional challenger.

There is still substantial separation between the first two positions, but Merritt Island now has more than eight rating points of breathing room over several teams packed underneath it.

Week 4 brings a direct district matchup when Astronaut visits The O’Dome. Astronaut currently sits outside the Power 10 but carries one of the region’s strongest schedule figures, giving Merritt Island another meaningful opportunity to strengthen its position.

John Carroll Moves Into the Top Three Despite Difficult Loss

John Carroll presents one of this week’s clearest examples of why ranking movement cannot be read strictly through wins and losses.

The Rams suffered a 45-7 loss against Cardinal Newman, yet move two positions regionally from No. 5 to No. 3 with a 64.81 FPRI rating.

At first glance, that may seem counterintuitive. The explanation is found in both the strength of the opponent and the movement occurring around John Carroll.

Cardinal Newman is one of the highest-rated teams in Florida and currently sits among the statewide elite. Losing decisively to that level of opponent still hurts John Carroll’s performance component, but the quality of competition provides much different context than a similar loss against a lower-rated team would.

John Carroll also carries a 15.4 strength-of-schedule rating, one of the strongest figures in the regional Power 10. Meanwhile, teams that had been positioned around or above the Rams suffered losses of their own, including Cocoa, Eau Gallie and Martin County.

The result is that John Carroll moves upward regionally even while remaining nearly unchanged in the broader strength conversation.

The Rams get a district matchup against Somerset Prep in Week 4, providing an opportunity to respond immediately and add another current-season victory.

Eau Gallie Holds No. 4 After Loss to Unbeaten Seminole

Eau Gallie remains No. 4 following a 27-13 loss to Seminole in Sanford.

The Commodores now carry a 64.45 rating and fall 14 positions statewide to No. 80.

Much like Vero Beach and John Carroll, the opponent matters considerably when evaluating the result. Seminole is 3-0 and currently sits inside the Central Florida Power 15, meaning Eau Gallie’s defeat came against a team that continues strengthening its own profile.

Eau Gallie also owns a 21.3 strength-of-schedule rating, the second-highest number among the Space & Treasure Coast top 10 behind Vero Beach.

That schedule quality helps explain why the Commodores remain inside the top four despite the loss.

The margin immediately around Eau Gallie has tightened, however. Only 2.87 rating points separate No. 4 Eau Gallie from No. 7 Jensen Beach, creating a much more competitive group beneath Merritt Island.

Week 4 gives Eau Gallie a direct district matchup at Rockledge. The Raiders have fallen sharply in the rankings, but the game provides another valuable head-to-head comparison within the region.

Fort Pierce Central Climbs After Dominating Rockledge

Fort Pierce Central produces one of the strongest Week 3 results among the teams in the middle of the Power 10.

The Cobras shut out Rockledge 35-0 at Lawnwood Stadium and climb two positions to No. 5 with a 61.58 FPRI rating.

The 35-point margin reaches the new FPRI cap exactly. Fort Pierce Central receives the full allowable margin value from the result, but any additional scoring beyond that point would not have increased the rating further.

The victory is especially important because Fort Pierce Central had been sitting outside the upper half of the rankings. With several teams around it losing, the shutout provides enough current-season evidence to move the Cobras into the top five.

Their strength-of-schedule figure remains significantly negative at this stage, so future results will become increasingly important as preseason influence declines. A strong record against weaker competition can only carry a team so far once more meaningful opponent information enters the model.

That makes Week 4 particularly significant.

Martin County travels to Lawnwood Stadium on Thursday night, creating a direct matchup between No. 5 Fort Pierce Central and No. 10 Martin County.

Space Coast Surges Five Spots Into the Top Six

Space Coast makes one of the largest moves inside this week’s Power 10.

The Vipers defeated Celebration 48-0 and climb five positions from No. 11 to No. 6 with a 61.07 FPRI rating. Statewide, Space Coast rises 18 positions to No. 105.

The result pushes the Vipers into the regional Power 10 after entering Week 3 outside it.

The 48-point victory also illustrates the impact of the 35-point margin-of-victory cap. Space Coast receives rating value through a 35-point margin, while the final 13 points of separation do not continue increasing the rating.

That is especially important for games involving heavily overmatched opponents. FPRI still recognizes a dominant performance but prevents the final stages of a blowout from carrying disproportionate weight.

Space Coast’s 0.8 strength-of-schedule figure remains relatively neutral, meaning the Vipers now need to continue stacking meaningful results if they want to hold their new position.

Week 4 sends Space Coast to Discovery in Lake Alfred, providing a cross-regional matchup against a Tampa Bay-area opponent.

Jensen Beach Rockets Six Spots After Beating South Fork

Jensen Beach owns the largest climb inside the current top 10.

The Falcons defeated South Fork 24-3 and surge six positions from No. 13 to No. 7 with a 59.92 rating. They also make a massive 47-position statewide jump, climbing to No. 114.

The result represents a significant change from where Jensen Beach sat only one week ago.

The Falcons’ 11.5 strength-of-schedule rating also gives their rise additional support. Unlike a team climbing exclusively through a large margin against weak competition, Jensen Beach carries enough opponent-strength information to provide the FPRI with broader context.

The Falcons now sit only 1.15 points behind Space Coast and 1.66 behind Fort Pierce Central.

That puts Jensen Beach squarely into the middle of a tightly compressed group from No. 5 through No. 8.

Week 4 brings an important district matchup when Sebastian River visits Jensen Beach on Thursday night. A win would give the Falcons another direct regional result and could continue one of the fastest climbs in the Power 10.

Titusville Slips After Loss to Spruce Creek

Titusville falls one position to No. 8 after losing 23-14 at home to Spruce Creek.

The Terriers now carry a 59.05 FPRI rating and fall 24 positions statewide to No. 120.

The loss came against a Spruce Creek team that remains inside the Central Florida Power 15 and carries a strong opponent profile of its own, which limits some of the damage associated with the defeat.

Titusville also owns a 14.5 strength-of-schedule rating, keeping the Terriers competitive within the tightly packed middle portion of the region.

Only 2.53 points separate No. 5 Fort Pierce Central from No. 8 Titusville.

That means one meaningful result could rapidly reorder several teams.

Titusville gets a direct district matchup in Week 4 when Palm Bay comes to Al Werneke Field.

Cocoa Tumbles Seven Spots After Stunning Loss at Newberry

No team in the Space & Treasure Coast Power 10 falls farther than Cocoa.

The Tigers entered Week 3 at No. 2 in the region before traveling to Newberry, where the Panthers handed Cocoa a 14-13 loss.

That result sends Cocoa down seven regional positions to No. 9 with a 58.39 FPRI rating.

The statewide movement is even more dramatic.

Cocoa falls 81 positions, dropping to No. 127 overall.

The size of the decline reflects both the result itself and the refined FPRI methodology. Newberry entered the matchup substantially below Cocoa, and the Panthers’ victory therefore creates a powerful head-to-head adjustment in their favor.

For Cocoa, the opposite side of that calculation matters. Losing to an opponent that entered significantly lower provides the model with evidence that the Tigers’ previous rating may have been too high relative to their current-season performance.

That does not mean Cocoa suddenly becomes an irrelevant team.

The Tigers still carry an 11.8 strength-of-schedule rating, and one result does not erase the entire underlying profile. But unlike a loss to an elite opponent, this is exactly the type of defeat that can cause a substantial correction when preseason expectations and current results begin diverging.

Cocoa has an open week in Week 4, which means the Tigers will have to watch the teams around them generate new information before getting another chance to respond on the field.

Martin County Falls to the Final Power 10 Spot

Martin County experiences another significant drop after a difficult Week 3 result.

Royal Palm Beach defeated the Tigers 47-13 in district play, sending Martin County four positions from No. 6 to No. 10 with a 58.20 rating.

The Tigers also fall 38 positions statewide to No. 129.

The 34-point margin sits just below the FPRI’s 35-point cap, meaning virtually the entire differential is reflected in the performance calculation.

Martin County’s 5.7 strength-of-schedule rating provides some support, but the Tigers now sit only 0.61 points ahead of Satellite, the first team outside the Power 10.

That leaves Martin County with very little room for another setback.

Week 4 offers an immediate opportunity to change the conversation when the Tigers travel to face No. 5 Fort Pierce Central on Thursday night.

With the two teams separated by only 3.38 rating points, the matchup could have significant implications throughout the middle and bottom of next week’s Power 10.

The Chase Just Outside the Power 10

Satellite is the first team out at No. 11 despite defeating Seabreeze 35-2.

The Scorpions carry a 57.59 rating and trail Martin County by only 0.61 points.

Satellite actually falls one regional position because of the larger gains made by Space Coast and Jensen Beach, another example of a team winning convincingly but still moving backward because the ranking is relative to everything happening around it.

Melbourne Central Catholic falls four positions to No. 12 after losing 41-13 to Bishop Moore. The Hustlers carry a 55.82 rating and remain within two points of the Power 10 cutoff.

Fort Pierce Westwood sits No. 13 following a 26-0 loss to Wellington, while Melbourne climbs three positions to No. 14 after dominating Winter Springs 55-14.

Viera drops three spots to No. 15 after losing 28-22 to Heritage. That result also produces one of the largest movements farther down the regional rankings, with Heritage climbing four regional positions and 84 statewide spots after earning the direct head-to-head victory.

Astronaut sits No. 16 but carries a notable 22.9 strength-of-schedule rating, making the War Eagles a team worth monitoring despite their current position outside the Power 10.

The cutoff remains competitive. Only 2.38 points separate No. 10 Martin County from No. 12 Melbourne Central Catholic, while several teams farther down have enough opponent-strength information to move quickly with a significant result.

Week 4 Spotlight: Martin County Visits Fort Pierce Central

One of the clearest Week 4 head-to-head comparisons in the region comes Thursday night at Lawnwood Stadium, where No. 10 Martin County visits No. 5 Fort Pierce Central.

The two teams enter from very different directions.

Fort Pierce Central climbs into the top five after shutting out Rockledge 35-0, while Martin County falls to the final Power 10 position after its 47-13 loss to Royal Palm Beach.

That creates immediate stakes for both teams.

A Fort Pierce Central victory would strengthen the Cobras’ position in the upper half and give the FPRI another direct regional result supporting their rise. A Martin County victory would provide exactly the type of response the Tigers need after Week 3 and could help stabilize a ranking that now sits only 0.61 points ahead of Satellite.

The region’s No. 1 team also begins district play when Vero Beach travels to Centennial on Friday night. The Indians are coming off the loss to St. Frances Academy but remain more than eight rating points ahead of Merritt Island.

Merritt Island hosts Astronaut in another district matchup. The Mustangs are trying to solidify their new No. 2 position, while Astronaut’s strong schedule figure gives the War Eagles an opportunity to create significant movement with an upset.

Eau Gallie travels to Rockledge, while Titusville hosts Palm Bay in two more Class 3A district matchups.

Jensen Beach hosts Sebastian River on Thursday night after making its six-position jump, giving the Falcons an opportunity to reinforce their new place inside the Power 10.

John Carroll hosts Somerset Prep in district play, while Space Coast travels to Discovery.

Satellite hosts Pine Ridge, and Heritage welcomes Legacy in another district matchup after the Panthers’ victory over Viera.

Melbourne travels to Oviedo on Thursday night, while Viera visits Lyman in a district game of its own.

Cocoa and Fort Pierce Westwood have open weeks.

The Region Is Becoming Much Harder to Sort Beneath Vero Beach

Vero Beach remains the clear regional leader, but almost everything beneath the Indians looks different after Week 3.

Merritt Island has climbed into the No. 2 position after winning at Ponte Vedra, while John Carroll and Eau Gallie remain highly rated despite losses against strong opposition. Fort Pierce Central has moved into the top five after shutting out Rockledge, and both Space Coast and Jensen Beach have surged from outside the Power 10 into Nos. 6 and 7.

Then there is Cocoa.

The Tigers entered Week 3 as Vero Beach’s closest challenger and leave it at No. 9 after losing to Newberry. That seven-position regional decline is one of the clearest examples this week of the refined FPRI responding more aggressively when a highly rated team loses to an opponent that entered substantially lower.

The contrast with Vero Beach is important.

Both teams lost in Week 3, but the losses were not remotely equivalent from a rating perspective.

Vero Beach lost to St. Frances Academy while carrying one of the strongest schedules in the region. Cocoa lost to a Newberry team that entered the matchup far below the Tigers in the ratings.

FPRI therefore does not simply record one loss beside each team and treat them the same. The quality of the opponent, the pregame rating relationship, the margin and the rest of each team’s résumé all provide context.

That difference helps explain why Vero Beach remains No. 1 while Cocoa falls from No. 2 to No. 9.

The middle of the rankings is also becoming extremely tight. Only 3.19 rating points separate No. 5 Fort Pierce Central from No. 10 Martin County, while Satellite sits only 0.61 outside the cutoff.

Week 4 should create even more direct evidence.

Fort Pierce Central and Martin County meet head-to-head. Merritt Island faces Astronaut. Eau Gallie gets Rockledge. Titusville plays Palm Bay. Jensen Beach hosts Sebastian River.

Vero Beach remains comfortably ahead.

The race behind the Indians has become almost completely unsettled.
